I am quite elated with this decision. Hopefully the country will be cleaner (relatively speaking) by the time I go back.

I hope this applies to villagers smoking beedi as well...probably that would be a stretch but they suffer the most. I hope it will extend to the villages and villagers in some capacity as we go on...

Is this a bloody joke? So let me get this straight - Some people are offended by others smoking so rather than making an effort to create "designated Smoking areas" where people can smoke, they "outlaw smoking alltogehter"

and India calls itself a democracy?? Commemorating Gandhi's birthday indeed :cuss: What a load of crap

btw, Western Countries don't ban smoking, they do exactly this - designate public smoking areas so people with anti smoking sensibilities can avoid them.

This "Our way or the highway ideology" is NOT democracy by any stretch of the imagination! Maybe India should change it's National Anthem to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuLWRAq-Kuk&feature=related

Shame on India

Desitiger - Just as an example, what would your approach be if your kid smoked? Democratic?

I personally rather these smokers smoke and die...if it isn't in them to quit. But you do have to consider second smoking you see...

Actually yes, it would be. As a parent I would do my best to advise my kid regarding the dangers associated with smoking, but once my kid is 18, it's upto them.

I agree that second hand smoke is a concern, but that's why we have designated smoking areas. Banning cigarettes all together is not only idiotic, but what gives them (Government) the right to do so?

And as for the "if it isn't in them to quit" bit, some people (includng yours truely) smoke out of pure choice. What gives YOU the right to mandate that we should quit?

As Voltaire said it -> I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.
