And even if it does not this time (which I think it won't)

Don’t count on that. Paul Martin is actually quite keen to see this go thru and the Liberal cabinet ministers are likely to be instructed to vote for the Bill. I read a news report yesterday that suggested that Liberal backbenchers are being advised to ‘take a walk’ on vote day. The NDP is likely to issue a ‘whip’ instructing all MP’s to vote for the bill and I understand there are only a few Quebecois MP’s who will vote against.

With the above, even if all Conservative MP’s vote against, the Bill will still be carried.

To the desis who find this repulsive – you’ll have to reconcile yourselves to it.

Not really counting on it. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, I don't think it'll pass. But I'm fine either ways.

hhhhmmmmm ..... some very interesting coments .....

As far as the children are concerned .... how would legallizing Gay marriages hurt them ?? .... well have'nt we all managed to convince the kids against drugs , violence , pornography etc etc ....... I know that the comparison might not be adequate for all ...... it is the essence of a social setup that will be altered because of these decisions ...

Someone else commented as to we'll have to "reconcile" with the outcome ...... I would never be able to fathom the notion that I did not do my part to secure a future for my kids ..... that is a difference between a dead society ...... I for one do not endorse the gay marriage .... and am willing to do my part in voicing my opinion .....We have rights too .... right to chose the laws by which we will be governed by

Which makes me wonder whether Paul M is ...........:D

Which also makes me wonder if even in Canada, MPs are not allowed to voice their opinions but are instructed by the leader to obey his wishes?

Which makes me again wonder whether this is really an issue which Paul Martin is personally deeply concerned with (and seemingly did nothing for it before he came to power), or it is just an ego he is satisfying (by getting something done to which most of the citizens are opposing) or a question of face saving since it has become such a big issue?

If you are against gay rights and think it would be bad for your children’s future, you should be ‘voicing your opinion’ for the criminalization of gay relationships. All that the legalization does, it provide a legal status for these relationships, which are being accepted anyway.

I always find it a little odd when immigrants speak out against equal rights for a section of society. Lets not forget that there was a time (not too long ago) when people of color were deemed undesirable in parts of North America. But times change, people change and one has to be willing to accept that change. That was the reason for my ‘reconcile’ comment.

Like everyother Human rights movement this too shall pass...with the right results.

Slavery, Womens Rights (or lack of it), Racism were all once institutional in North america and though it was very strongly defended, look what happened to it. They are history.

Not everyone who supports gay marriage is necessarily gay themselves!

Incidentally, the whip (compelling members of a political party to vote in a certain way on Bills / motions in Parliament) is a established principal in a democracy. Its something that’s used in the Indian Parliament and Legislative Assemblies too, where the consequence for not following the ‘whip’ is disqualification.

Certain decisions of the Courts have been the trigger for tabling of the Bill in Parliament (the courts ruled that the wording of marriage as a union between a man and a woman was unconstitutional).

Incidentally, if you do a search on the internet, you will find that the issue has been around since June 2003, when Jean Chretien also voiced his support.

Your comments that suggest that 'most of the citizens are opposing' are also misinformed. Opinion polls do indicate that people are divided. Got a link from back in 2002, 45% for, 47% against, 8% undecided
