Having said that I feel that even if a person has dual citizenship but is primarily a resident of one country , he should have a fair chance to be elected ...

Like you said earlier, just because one has a single citizenship it does not mean that they will vote or the govts position(war in Iraq). Thats just as it should be.

I dragged the notion of dual citizenship into this because of the Stephan Dion question. The guy...even though a dual citizen has had years of public service for Canada on his record. He has definitely done more for Canada than say someone who came into Canada 5 yrs ago and can now vote against him due to his citizenship status. THAT is blatant hypocrisy.

I think that by making OCI and dualcitizenship an issue I have made my point. :p . If religion is the opium of the masses, Nationalism is the cannabis of the masses. Its only the middle class that is preoccupied, manipulated and swayed by these issues.

The global elite have always been denationalized. e.g: Soros, Mittal, Gates etc.

not my personal belief. There is something called an oath that you take when you get your citizenship. That oath, my friend, spells it out. You have to be loyal to the country or not be Canadian.

Not necassarily , I think there can be a conflict b/w a person s loyalties and principles .... many US / UK citizens oppose the Iraq war and would vote against any such Govt .... do they have divided loyalties .... I presume not . They cant trade their loyalty for their principles .

Our discussion is about dual-citizens. My examples were based on that. Has nothing to do with voting by citizens within a country.

I do agree that person voting in a country should not be a deserter as is the case in most of us Indians ... we left our country for better pastures .... if we live there for even 5 months a year , it shows that we associate ourselves with india and have a fair right to vote .....

Oh, do not get me wrong, you have all the rights to vote in India. But you have to give up your rights to vote in Canada. Because of that one reason I gave you way before. You cannot be loyal to your wife and someone else's wife as well. It has nothing to with the time you spend with each of the wives.

You know I've had this discussion many times on here. I have come to realize that the concept of loyalty is phoren to most desis. I've tried to explain it in team concept where you are a part of a team and you are loyal to the team. I have tried to explain it in terms of the family unit. But it is always ends up in a circular discussion. So this is the end of this for me

BIG VEE'S narrow views!

Loyalty is a state of mind and I do not understand what has it got to do with dual citizenship. Loyalty is attached to certain qualities/virtues/characteristics that you find in the object.

Harper is a citizen of Canada but is more loyal to Bush than people of Canada. Would and should his citizenship a factor in deciding Dion Vs Harper?

BV's example of loyalty to wife and Paan shop are chidish, simplistic and amateurish and has no relation with concept of loyalty. Loyalty is not fixed thing and largely depends on virtues/qualities that we attach to the object. To quote BV, say the Paan shop starts using inferior quality Masala, would he still stick around? Say if a guy who is "Loyal" to his wife finds that she is having affair with some one else will he still be loyal? BV's concept of loyalty seems to have been borrowed from some "c" grade Bollywood film script.

The arguments so far sounds like...

"Everybody wants to go Heaven, but nobody wants to die"

What difference does it make what paper you hold?
My neighbour has Canadian, Uk and Labenon Citizenship but he still does not mow his lawn, always throws Garbage on the front of his house and hoots his horn any time of the day or night. What good are his papers if hisways are difficult to live with.

Dion should keep his dual ditizenship and I hope he gets elected to be the next PM.

We know in our hearts that if we had the same Security, Economical Opportunities, Educational Standards, Health and Social infrastructres back home as in Canada or USA we all be back home. The climate alone would pull us back ti Des. In other worlds ew are Economic Rafugees and as such hold dual citizenship should be acceptable.

Think about duel ditizenship next time we are cheering for a cricket team, be it, Sri Lankan, Indian, Kenyan, UK etc.
