Do they(canadian companies) check refrences given for back home (India) ?

Yes, they do.
If its a entry level 10-12 dollar job, they will ask you for email addressess of your previous employer back home. They will write to them and will expect a formal reply from them.
The more important the position, for which you are being considered, the more careful your employers will be, before hiring you. They might call your previous employer for that.
Bigger companies have set budgets to go up to the extent of long distance calling for references.

He had given 3 references - 1 in India, 1 in the UK and 1 in the US - they called each and every one of them.
