There is only so much one can learn from a book, there is no substitute for experiencing real life.
True, but one couldnot possibly travel to every part of the world to gain knowldge. We are not Darwin.

Someone else writes a book, therefore what you read is really his or her opinion or interpretation.
A lot of reasearch work of very serious nature is done second hand.
Quoting from standard works is the norm rather than exception.

Agreed 100%.

The idiot box may be the answer, since I could not possibly meet every type of person.

I have, I've been to all the inhabited continents and over 50 countries, so don't tell me it is impossible.
Technically Antarctica is inhabited too....by Penguins and a bunch of reaserchers.
Anyway,
In what capacity did you go there?
How much time did you spend there?
How many cities did you visit?
How many people of differeant types within that country did you meet?
Did you sample the flora and fauna of that place?
Did you sample all different kinds of food?
Did you partake in their cultural activities?
How many days were you there for in each of these cities in over 50 countries?

You ask such stupid questions. Of course I cannot say I did everything, but in my books some is better than none.
And why exactly are they stupid?
I think those are relevant questions and will help us know how deeply you know about a particular place/ people?
You yourself have said that One has to travel to know such stuff and that one must also know things at a personal level to give an unbiased and properly informed opinion.
So I asked you a subset of a very large number of questions that could have been asked. You chose to shoot back with the 'stupid' queston.
Its very easy to go on a world trip (finances allowing) and hop from place to place and take a few pictures and say "Look, because I travelled to so many places, I automatically know every thing about them".
I have visited Rome, Athens, Damascus, Tehran, London among other places. But for a few days only and as a tourist. I dont remember every detail. didnt keep a diary. So the only way I can get any more knowledge about them is consult books, watch history/discovery channels etc....
To really really know about them I would have to go on a field trip to these places.
What I can say is that 3 places I have actually lived for quite some time so can tell you things in more detail. I have lived in India (my country of birth) for a long time. I grew up in North Africa (8 years), so know a little bit more than a tourist would know. I have been here in north America for 9 years (4 in USA and 5 in Canada).
