Not to sound intruding, but my impression was that you were doing reasonably well.

No worries I am an open being. Your impression is correct I am doing fairly well.

Are you working as an engineer or in some other area?

Yes I am working as an engineer. My field of expertise being 3d modelling and Finite element analysis. I just finished the last requirement for a CET and so will be certified shortly, and am going to start working towards my PENG. I design a lot of prototypes and work on improving our overall efficiency of the process (so far improved it quite a bit, never paid attention to the numbers but almost 25% of rework has been reduced.).

Did you also graduate from Mac?

Yes I did :)

Any idea what are the others working as?

Two work for a sheet metal company as a little bit skilled labour
One is a CNC operator with Husky
One is doing general labour job
One is laid off had a decent job as an autocad drafter with a small firm.
One is in an assistant engineering manager for a small firm.

Are they are grads from India or elsewhere? How does it matter where they got jobs? I am sure desis in need of jobs would give priority to location over the job itself.

I was implying that Toronto does not have any more vacancies for engineers and yes they were grads from india with an average age of 30 or more if that matters.

And I thought we had plenty on this forum.

Dio
Its good that you have started this thread.
Myself a degree in industrial engineering and diploma in mechanical engineering from India.Yet to upgrade my canadian education.
After 5 months of my landing, got a break as an industrial engineer for a 6 month conrtract position.Got a 2 month extension which is due to get expired in 30th sept.
The position is in demand in this company but the budget issue is the only hinderance for further negotiation.
I am keeping my finger crossed as only the time will take its own course.
Moreever I am posting my updated resume for last couple of months but in vain.
Almost all recruiters I talked to , are of the same opinion that the prospective employers are in need of atleat 3 years of "canadian experience".
How does it makes the difference if you have the skills and most important if you can communicate within these environment which I am doing for last 8 months was my question.
They dont have convincing repies.

In the nutshell
"Luck do matters and take control over your skills and confidence "

I would appreciate anybody's feedback or guidance what to do next in this type of situation

Then? Didn’t you say you were on H1 in the US before coming here?

Yes.

Quote:

I thought you had experience working in IT in the US? Or is that incorrect? And if you did, then what was it that you worked on?

Yes. No. Oracle, front back and middle ends. Some light DBA and Designer 2K.

Quote:

Incidentally, any reason you didn’t go for the same co-op as your friend did?

The simple answer would be I was not interested in a Engg field and didnt even know or care about co-ops. I had my mind in USA and was set to go back. Then other things happened. Call me for a long winded answer to this.

Just to clairify I did have a Job here in Canada in IT for almost 1 1/2 years.

Absolutely valid and correct.

Skilled trades are more in demand and easier to acquire.

Not all Canadians want to become doctors/engineers/lawyers or go in such white collar professions. I have known several Canadians here who actually plan and desire to become millwrights and such after finishing high school.

Skilled trades are huge. My friend made a shrewd decision and quite early in his stay here. You have to be highlly flexible along with other qualities.
I am adaptable, not very flexible.

Sorry for the questions. Feel free to ignore them if you so wish.

No problemo.

I am really surprised-19000+ members and only 4 engineers ?

So what have you been into Dio?

No point in whinning or this thread will transform to communication skills improvement thread.
I am back to school despite of having 12 years experience in engineering "My field". 50% of my class strength is contributed by foreing trained engineers with over 10 years experience on an average.

That’s very good.

You seem to be relatively young. Did you come here on study permit and then continued on, or were you working in India, came here on immigration, couldn’t manage to get a break, and therefore went back to school. If the latter is correct then that strengthens the requirement of two factors:
1. Age.
2. Re-education.

Did you do a bachelor’s or master’s from Mac?

Again please do not think I am intruding. I hope these questions and answers benefit other immigrant engineers.

I have put this question earlier too. How is P.Eng helpful if you already have a job? Is it mandatory for certain types of jobs?

Wow! You mean even after getting a master’s, of 7 people only 2 (including yourself) could manage a decent break?

That doesn’t sound good at all! What is your analysis as to why the 5 could not make it? Is it because of poor performance in school, or other factors like presentation, communication etc.?

Maybe you can tell them to give you a chance at proving yourself and that they can pay you only after they are satisfied with your work.

It would also be interesting if you could ask them to clarify what exactly do they mean by “Canadian experience”, like what qualities and abilities do they expect from a candidate who has “Canadian experience”.

Other than that keep on trying and keep your fingers crossed. Wish you luck!

I guess you mean Oracle Forms then.

My impression is that for some reason Oracle’s front end does not have the same popularity in Canada as some others like Powerbuilder/VB etc. More recent technologies like .Net etc are fast outpacing others.

Moreover, ERPs like SAP and Oracle Applications etc are reducing the need for core program development.

However, a comparatively stronger market for Oracle’s front end continues to exist in the US.

The board may have 19000+ members but it is my guess that not more than 1% of them are active.

Maybe the mods could find get some stats on the activity profile of users. Gather information about the last login of all registered users. Then group them in time periods e.g. no of users that logged in within the last 1 day, user’s that logged in within last 5 days, and so on.

Count the users who are in most of the groups. This number will give the active vs virtually dead members.

I am an electrical engineer. I came during the IT boom days of 1998, when anyone who could spell ‘software’ could get a job. I had learnt some programming back home.

After 15 days of landing, got a job with an oil company(can’t give names) on contract doing stoopid Excel stuff.

3 months after that got a job as an Analyst in a reputed manufacturing company and have been with it ever since.

I didn’t start this thread for the purpose whining or applauding, though I have nothing against either.

I was just curious about my fraternity here. How many and doing what? But looks like there aren’t many, or at least not on this board.

So, how does it feel going back to school after a gap of 12 years? How difficult is it to go back to books and theory after having been out of touch with academics for so long unless of course your work was connected to education?
