You seem to be relatively young. Did you come here on study permit and then continued on, or were you working in India, came here on immigration, couldn’t manage to get a break, and therefore went back to school. If the latter is correct then that strengthens the requirement of two factors:
1. Age.
2. Re-education.

Did you do a bachelor’s or master’s from Mac?

I came here on a study permit and continued on......I have had my days in the sun on and off during school and after school so I am young but a lot more experienced then a lot of my generation guys. ALthough I had a machine shop in India and the reason I landed a couple jobs easily compared to the other guys were a couple reports/projects I did during college and my knowledge of machining and my way of talking/communicating. I think reeducation should be a must.......I am not talking about going back to school and doing a masters or a PHd but I for one think we dont work with the same principles and Ideas or the resources back home compared to the engineers here. They are constantly backed my simulation softwares and modelling softwares and statistics and failure modes analysis and all.

I was ignorant when I came for my degree coz I did not even know that canada had an immigation policy and all. One of buddies filed and told me the process and I followed and next thing i know i got my PR.

Again please do not think I am intruding. I hope these questions and answers benefit other immigrant engineers.

Like I said earlier,I am an open person so not to worry.happily eat curry:)

I have put this question earlier too. How is P.Eng helpful if you already have a job? Is it mandatory for certain types of jobs?

Check this link out for some basic info .......http://workdestinations.org/occupation_list.jsp?lang=en
My personal reasons for Getting the PE
1-My salary will increase
2-More respect within my community
3-Get to interact with other members when meetings or discussions are arranged.
4-Being part of another fraternity.
5-Can notarize stuff.
6-I plan on starting/finishing MBA before Iturn 30....Lethal combination as per me Peng with an MBA......I have worked with a couple and the confidence they have is just astounding

Wow! You mean even after getting a master’s, of 7 people only 2 (including yourself) could manage a decent break?

All Bachelor's degree..............unfortunately just two. There was another who found a decent drafting job but got laid off.

Quote:

That doesn’t sound good at all! What is your analysis as to why the 5 could not make it? Is it because of poor performance in school, or other factors like presentation, communication etc.?

Performance was average of all of us.......ALthough had one who has an honours degree(He is doing a labour job although his communication skills are not bad and also has a canadian name :) ).
Presentation and communication was below average as per my standards for the rest.

Hey does anybody here have any experience with visual manufacturing at all. I would be interested in learning.

I guess you mean Oracle Forms then.

Mostly.

And then you got laid off I guess. Or was it the expiration of contract work?

Was the same project that I was working on in US. They just transferred me to the local office in Mississauga. They had a project in the Peel region. It was a one off favor to me, they really could have worked it from the US office. At a certain point they needed just the basic
support staff. They were also expecting more contracts, which didnt materialize.

So, how does it feel going back to school after a gap of 12 years? How difficult is it to go back to books and theory after having been out of touch with academics for so long unless of course your work was connected to education?

I have been to college for 2 weeks as of today. I am not feeling comfortable sitting in lecture 8 hrs / day. Plus they talk a lot in context of consumer porducts, retail marketing or warehousing. Reason can be, industries are not an important part of Canadian economy or lecturers do not have exposure to industries.
Idea of going back to school sucks!! Workshops, seminars or skill development program not going for more than 4 - 6 weeks are OK but sitting through semesters is a bit mind boggling stuff now for me.

hi azazf

Good to know that ur doing well in ur field. I am a new immigrant here and planning to do a masters in mechanical engg. Infact I hav got an admit at McGill for jan'06 and waiting for admission decision from U of T. I hav applied for course based masters and not reasearch based since I m not interested in research. I hope that my canadian education can help me getting a job in my own field. I m planning to specialize my masters in Design and Manufacturing.

Do employers look to hire engineers with a masters degree? Is that an advantage? I hav recently completed my bachelors in mech engg and have little work exp. Your input will be helpful
