Do employers look to hire engineers with a masters degree? Is that an advantage? I hav recently completed my bachelors in mech engg and have little work exp. Your input will be helpful

I am sure Azazf will be along soon to answer your query.

One cannot say that a Masters will guarantee you a job. But it will most certainly improve your worth and chances of getting one.

Quite a lot will also depend on your performance and networking abilities.

Over to Azazf.

If you have done due diligence on this board, you should be aware by this time that your diploma and work experience are virtually worthless in this country.

If you are doing reasonably well where you are and have a comfortable life, it would not be a bad idea to reconsider the whole idea of immigration.

Unless you are extremely lucky, get ready to struggle at hourly paid odd jobs.

If you want to do better, be fully prepared to go to school here.

hi azazf

Good to know that ur doing well in ur field. I am a new immigrant here and planning to do a masters in mechanical engg. Infact I hav got an admit at McGill for jan'06 and waiting for admission decision from U of T. I hav applied for course based masters and not reasearch based since I m not interested in research. I hope that my canadian education can help me getting a job in my own field. I m planning to specialize my masters in Design and Manufacturing.

Do employers look to hire engineers with a masters degree? Is that an advantage? I hav recently completed my bachelors in mech engg and have little work exp. Your input will be helpful

You stand a better chance of advancing within the company once you finish your masters.
Having said that if you dont really need to then avoid doing a masters degree and try to find a job right now and schedule your masters for later.
I wanted to do my MBA after I graduated but my profs told me to find a job first and then once I have built some experience/contacts/references then I should go ahead and finish my masters at my company's expense and It will be a lot more useful with respect to everything.
Considering your little experience I think it would be wise to wait up on the masters coz after you finish your masters you are an intelligent bookworm/smart theoritical guy with not enough knowledge about the shop floor.
The field you are choosing looks good to me and the future is going to be brighter with every passing day coz as long as people keep inventing things that field will flourish.
Hiring a guy with masters Engg means more salary.........more salary....means more responsibilities...........means more reliability.......means more experience .........means more proven skills.
Where as for a bachelor's grad those expectations are less comparatively.
Hope that helps
Azaz

position of Engineers is not good in canada. I know many who had landed with me in 2001 are now well setteled in Labour Jobs( what they call permanent Job). I had applied in many websites , companies etc but no response till now. So, i had stopped applying & gone for alternate routes. I know one of my friend who completed his P. Eng. but still working as labour & enjoys it. in fact, he got a job for 2 month as a engineer but get laid off. In my opinion , going for engineering education is not very promising in this country. Only good option is go for Software(IT), Accountancy & Medical care ( MBA from good university). I know few persons who came from india, did Dental Assistant course & earning around 40-50K with lot of OT.
It is possible that even after doing Bachelors in Engineering , if you have to do laour jobs then why waste your time/money/energy.
PS- I am mechanical engineer with around 20 years experience in India.

I know quite a few engineers who did find jobs but they got laid off.
I am not being blunt when I say they are lying and that most were not laid off but were either fired or let go coz of incompetence.
I know this personally and I know these people so nobody please come telling me that its not the case and they are all super competent. Maybe one thing I can agree on would be that they are not given enough time to familiarise themselves with the system and almost never given training in the initial period.
My buddies tell me that if you go over the initial probation hump then you should be fine. I also know guys 10+ and 20+ years of mechanical/manufacturing experience and struggling to find a decent break and when they do it has been extremely difficult to retain that job.
These guys with tremendous amount of knowledge and experience are most times not current with designing softwares or erp packages or access and simlar softwares.

In my earlier post in this very thread I had mentioned a friend of mine who had an honours from Mcmaster and was doing a labour job for the last two years. For the past 6 months he was working through HCR(Temp Agency) for one of the MAGNA plants in toronto and just yesterday he called me saying he got a job as quality tech.....He should have gotten a better job but alteast this is better than the labour job and like he advanced from it to a QT I am sure his perseverence is going to pay off and he will get ahead.

Most of the guys who get stuck in the so called permanent labour jobs are too content with their situation and also that they do not have the financial resources to move around switching jobs.
