If you really want simple life than you can manage $1500 per month in Montreal.
Get a 1 bdr rental for 600/per month. plenty available not close to downtown though - but montreal is small city and bus/metro transportation is very effective.
NOTE: assuming" you are looking for Comfortable cost of living" means your income source is very low , so add some monthly benefit from Quebec provincial and federal funds
$2500/ per month income is comfortable leaving cost in Montreal - you can have car with reasonable insurance cost , plus short distance everywhere so low Gaz cost. thats for family with two kids , assume you get about $500 additional family benefits

Donot bet on it dude !
Baby expenses are very high. Diapers alone will set you back by $ 300 per month. After age 1, you are supposed to feed the baby with Milk (or formula , if earlier than that).
Then comes medical expenses for the child. Consultation and medicines. Baby toys, car seat etc..

I agree with Blue_Peafowl. Apartments / 1 Bed's are so cheap in montreal (aleays less than $ 800). How come you got stuck with a $ 936 one. In the winter expect the hydro (electricity) to come like $ 50 a month (when you use the heater).
