Why do people immigrate from India to Canada??
I have already seen many posts on this board from Indian computer programmers with H1B visas in USA, who are also trying to push through for Canadian immigration. Why are they trying so hard to make sure they are able to stay in North America?
From what I heard, India is a pretty cool country with good opportunities for IT professionals, a rich culture, spicy cuisine, and a much warmer climate. Why are all these people so desperate to remain either in USA or Canada?
Does anyone know??
Thanks,
Alfaris

Re: Why do people immigrate from India to Canada??
Good question. As someone who has practiced Integral yoga since 1996 and
gotten a lot of insight to the Indian culture during several visits to the
Satchidananda Ashram in Virginia, I've wondered the same thing. From what I
can see, India has a lot of great qualities.
I'm looking forward to some replies from the perspective of those who know
both India and North America better than I do.

Its the salary in North America
The answer to the question not so simple. There are many factors.
1. We in India have a hold a very high Image for Non Residents relatives and friends. The chances of success and level of opportunity and recognition, money in foreign countries is percieived to be better.
2. With liberalised market the job security even in India is no more assured(especially in IT). I think in this scenario a life in Canada would be more socially secured be cause of free medical, child education and in extreme conditions unemployment benefit. Such security in India is non existent.
IT industry is perceived to lucrative but very volatile. After all working for odd jobs is not considered a stigma and readily available. Nobody (or atleast very few people) dies of hunger in Canada. India if one loses a job then no altrenative ocuupation, no insurance and no medical coverage of any kind.
3. Getting a citizenship of foreign especially common-wealth country can be asset in pursuing further studies for children and career prospects for self. Visa restrictions are much less restricted. Getting a visa/ scholarship from India would be always be more difficult.
Thus although the prospects in India is good currently for IT Pros there are many psychological aspects as well as hidden benifits in long trem in settling abroad although it might be a a struggle initially.
Thus for normal engineers the porospects are definitely better as it is a dead end for enginners in India.
what about
e.g:
1) going to get your passport done and getting the formalities done on the same day (within 2-3 hrs)...without having to bribe anybody
2)getting your phone activated on the same day you move into a new apt/home ...without having to bribe anybody
3)being able to walk into almost any public mall/shoppingcenter/commercial enterprise irrespective of your income.
4) Being able to have your children enlisted for activities like computers, swimming etc irrespective of your income.
5) being able to have food/shelter and clothing unless you choose not to accept social assistance.
6) Ability to live in a society with increased social awareness. Nobody can claim to be a remote control for the govt. It is not 'normal' here to have 'servants'. Nobody can claim anymore that canada is only for canadians or that people from other parts of canada should not come to work in toronto or montreal and then go ahead and physically harm those people.
5) A guy who used to collect garbage(among other jobs) has the opportunity to be team lead of a sw company team and earn more than 150k/yr. Another guy who used to work odd jobs with construction crews now has a net worth of 1 mil $ atleast. I am not talking about the exceptions here. I am talking about colleagues of mine. What I am trying to say is that, your birth status does not have that much of a part to play in your future here as it does in India or Pakistan. That, I feel, is the most awesome thing about this place.
there are many more...but I guess people just take it for granted. Note: I am not saying that this is a perfect society. Its not without its problems. But I think the above are some of the reasons people choose to stay in the west. If it was just the job factor then more would be returning than is the case now. A read through of the board will show you that job satisfaction is quite low among immigrants...they still choose to stay. And if you ask them...most say...'for the kids '. Even if it is at a subconcious level, they know the difference.

I agree with jake3d, but on the other hand India is improving very fast and many people are staying back these days, and also many people abroad are thinking of moving back (including yours truly).
But I think it all boils down to the fact that you can make more money here than in India. Hence you can afford a better lifestyle. A pizza delivery guy here has a better lifestyle than many graduates in India!

1. DONT WE LIKE OUR CULTURE?
2.ARENT WE ALIENS HERE?
3.DONT WE LIKE TO CELEBRATE DIWALI ,HOLI ,DUSSHERA AND NOT HALLOWEN CHRISTMAS AND THANKSGIVING?
4.DONT WE MISS THE WARMTH OF INDIA OUR NATION?
5.DONT WE LIKE TO CELEBRATE INDIAN VICTORIES ?
I KNOW THE ANSWER IS YES.
WE HAVE ALWAYS PERCEIVED THAT WESTERN PEOPLE HAVE A BETTER LIFESTYLE THEN WE HAVE IN INDIA TRUE.HERE EVERYONE HAS A CAR BUT ITS NESSASITY HERE AS PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS NOT AS GOOD AS IN INDIA .WE USE COOKING RANGE ,MICROWAVE, HEATERS, AIRCONDITIONERS AND ITS NOT COMMON IN INDIA TRUE.ARENT THIS THINGS ONLY MATERIALISTIC.
WE SAY THAT WE ARE DOING ALL THAT FOR OUR CHILDREN.
JUST REMEMBER ONE THING
IF MONEY IS LOST NOTHING IS LOST
IF HEALTH IS LOST SOMETHING IS LOST
IF CHARACTER IS LOST EVERYTHING IS LOST.
STAYING IN THIS SOCIETY DO WE FEEL THAT OUR KIDS GONNA HAVE THE SAME VALUES THAT WE HAVE BEEN BOUGHT UP WITH.HERE WE SACRIFICE OUR ENTIRE LIFE FOR OUR FUTURE(READ:KIDS) AND WHEN WE REALLY NEED THEM DURING OUR OLD AGE THEY DONT HAVE TIME FOR US AND THEY DONT WANT US .
SO WHY NOT ENJOY LIFE AS IT GOES.
ONE MORE THING I WOULD LIKE ALL OF US TO MAKE A NOTE OF
LIFE IS SOMETHING WHICH HAPPENS TO YOU WHEN YOU ARE BUSY MAKING PLANS .
FINAL CONCLUSION
AAJAR POOT KUPUT TOOH KYON PAISA RAAKHE
AAJAR POOT SUPUT TOOH KYON PAISA RAAKHE
MEANING IF YOU KID IS A GOOD KID THEN HE WILL MAKE HIS WAY IN HIS LIFE AND IF YOUR KID IS A SPOILT BRAT NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU KEEP HE WILL BECOME A PAUPER.
SO WHAT I FEEL IS THAT INDIA IS AS GOOD AS EVER AND IT IS JUST BECAUSE OF THE PERCEIVED IMAGE OF THE WEST E COME HERE AND THEN WE ARE MENTALLY STUCK AND ARE NOT OPEN TO THE IDEA OF MOVING BACK.
IF SOMEONE IS STRUGGLING TO MAKE A LIVING IN INDIA HE SHOULD COME HERE ELSE INDIA IS GR8 AS EVER.

Sucess is not an accident it is a result of hardwork with intelligence.
Nishit,
After reading your piece, I am almost convinced about the futility of living in Canada. But one question remains- WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE?
