l5a raised a good point. All the products belongs to the company. Employee is paid to do the work. So I am still puzzled how an employee can steal the drawings? He/she may do everywhere, even with a new company. At the same time, u can steal good drawings/work done by others and claim that u did those, just to impress the potential employer.
What a scary profession!

hello!
We have cases in which i have interviewed people and they show us fantastic drgs. / renderings and then when we hire them, we find them useless. We have to fire those people. Even in the office that i work in now, in the staff meetings, the boss used to tell us that he hired some people based on their portfolio but after he had hired them he found them useless and hence had to fire them.
In Canada (as people say), all works done by the employee belong to the employer.
In some cases, people cut out the title block of the drawings to hide the client's name, office name etc.. Does this sound right to you.
Now what do you say to this :
In case you support the employer, Every office has a lot of architecture books in which you have the phto's of the building and the basic plans. There is a copy right clause. In every architect's office, architects look at award winning buildings and copy the same building for their design. They change a window here and there, change the building materials and you have a sort of an identical building. Now you canot go to court b'cos Architecture copy right laws are Subjective (and not objective) and you canot prove anything. What do you say in this case.
To be very frank, my employer (we design only houses in the GTA) goes to every house sale, gets the brouchure and then takes a house from that , modifies it and sells it as a new design. is this wrong? can you sue my employer?
I know civil engineers, who steal rates of building materials from their employer, the tender methods etc... and do their own private work.
Every one cheats. you are just not aware of it.
I have worked with an Aluminum units supplier in Saudi arabia. he says that his aluminim is 2.5 mm thick. but he extrudes it for 2.3MM thick and he cheats millions in a year.
what do you say to this?
When you come to companies, what about CIBC enron Scandel? was anyone punished?
and Nortel scandel. was anyone punished? Nortel paid 2.1 billion to settle a law suit while frank dunn is scott free at his oakville home.

Sidenote : My Verdict
If you canot give your employee his works in your office for portfolio, donot request portfolio's when hiring. It is b'cos of stuff like this taht i am trying to come out of architecture/ building construction business. I am more interested in the stock market (not to say that all companies are honest in trading)
Disclaimer : In the world (esp. india) there are 5% real talented and clever architects who do not have to go through this pain since they were creative since born. I donot belong to that catagory. My views are personal. Just b'cos of my views, i neither encourage nor discourage people to enter this profession. Enter/ study thisprofession at your own risk and contact a student counsellor for information
