I'm going to comment about your drafting position situation:

a)Mistakes:
Are you human or a robot? You are expected by default to do mistakes like any other human being. What you are not allowed is to do much more mistakes than expected, in that case they may fired you.

I work also in the industry as an Estimator for a custom home builder. I'm tired of the mistakes that the drafting staff does, not really for the mistakes, I'm tired because they don't want to reconize the mistakes.

Usually, in the custom home industry the plans are revised several times (redrawn as per customer request to change lay out, details, etc.) and I have noticed that when the draftman missed something the previous time, he added in the revision and I have to include it in the Estimate (if I find it). The customer always compleins about this because he thinks that it was included in the previous drawing and consenquently in the previos estimate.

In my experience you should no worry to much about mistakes as long as you comunicate them always to you boss and avoid making more than expected. The worst that can happen is that the city will ask for changes in the drawings, you would have to print them again.

You should always have a system to help you to find mistakes, have a check list, give your work to somebody to check it out, and when you are done pass the information that was given to you toguether with you final work (keep copies always) to your boss.

If in the worst case scenario there is a mistake that cost money to the company, isn't part of the cost of making bussines? That's the reason the company charges $40./hr and you are just being paid $12.00/hr.

Try to be professional on your work(because you are expected to be) and ask every body be like that too. If you have to make changes in a drawing ask or make a list of the proposed changes.

When you are done with the revisions pass that list along with your final work plus other changes that had to be done too because of the previous ones. Example: if a customer asks you to add a fireplace, you probably have to add also a chimmeney.

Work load:

I'm also on the same boat. Everybody wants you to work in multiple projects and you know what? I never say "no", what I say is the following: I'm already working on this project and for me to keep accuracy I need you to set prioritites regarding these projects. So, my boss tells me what he wants me to do first an so on.

Wages:

You should move to Edmonton, you have more chances of being paid better and the cost of living is much less than in other parts of Canada in my opinion a guy with your experience could be making close to 20 or more per hour.

Hi guys!
Thought i will update you on the progress.
Till date , i have not told my boss the mistake that i did. Recently the client came to me and shouted something filthy and i pretended not to hear him. He then went to my boss and complained that i was not responding to his questions and that i was a nervous wreck and also that i never keep my table tidy. He also shouted at my boss that our office was too slow on his projects and that he will sue our office if we donot speed up. My boss then called me and told me "TK, even though i know that the client is a *******, please answer him in a diplomatic way if he asks you anything". I donot know what "Diplomatic " means but i am going to tell my boss that i am going to leave the country if he gives me advise like this. Also i did not like him telling me that i should clean my desk. I have been flooded with work and i was multi tasking. Naturally my desk is bound to be cluttered.
I have 12 siting to do and i am working on the long weekend on that. I hope to finish 6 by this night.
Also, i found out that another site plan (done by another architect firm but now entrusted to us ) was wrong. It was not our mistake but since that house was entrusted to us, the client will ask why it took us 6 weeks to identify the mistake. I plan to tell all these facts to my boss on Monday or Tuesday.
Thanks to who ever was interested in reading my update.
TK

Hello CD members,
I did not want to start a new thread for my problem and so i thought that i will continue with this thread even though it is a entirely new problem.
For the past 3 months i have been made to work 7 days a week , 10-14 hours a day. My remuneration is of annual type , calculated at 37.5 hours a week. No over time is paid. The boss says that he will give time off later for any period worked after 44 hrs. but i really donot think that it will work since is has no pay. I can even take a month away now (without pay) and join after a month. so what is the gain? So he wants us to work as much as possible for every week with no pay.
Due to my hectic schedule, i made a lot of mistakes at work and blamed for it. By god's grace, i was not repremanded so much, though i was given warnings, stares, abusive words etc.... I though that my hectic work will end by next week.
But today, My boss gave me a new project, which will make mework 4 more months 7 days a week, 10-14 hours a day. I am the only one qualified in my office to do that work. I may get a helper from my office but he will not be of that help to me , anyway.
What do i do in this case? I can look for a new job (which i am going to do anyway). I donot want to do any mistakes in this project atleast (but due to pressure, may be i will). If i do a drawing for 1 day and there is a mistake, i need 2 days to correct it and this will put additional pressure.
I can suggest my employer to hire a new person, but it may take time and there is no guarentee that they will be available.
I donot want to work and die like this in Canada.
I am also hesitant to resign and look for a new job, since i know from experience that if you donot have a job, then it is very hard for you to get a job. Being in a job and looking for another job could take years to come since i will not have enough time to even apply for jobs.
What would CD's advise me.
What should i speak to my boss?
Based on your replies i am going to take a line of action.
TK

Flooded with work??? You without doubt have the highest posts per day on CD. And you write long posts at that.

Not complaining about that, you're more than welcome to do so. But did you ever think how much time that takes up? I don't get how you can post a long post about how you're flooded with work on cd (if you were, how did you get time to post).

My advice is start paying more attention to your own life. Help yourself before you try to help others...

BL,
Every man needs rest even during work. When i am flooded with work, there are times that i canot do anything. My head goes heavy and i need 2 or 3 mins. break. That is when i write on CD.
You might have noticed that of late my postings have become very less.
I come in at 9:10 am and i leave at 8:30 pm. I spend 30 mins . a day on CD which i guess is worth it.
My job always needs me to be on the computer and my internet is always open. So when i need a break (once in eevry 30 mins. or so) i post.
TK
Sidenote : When my boss gave me the additional work, i could not work for atleast 5-6 hr's today. I felt really bored of my day today. This often happens to me once in 3 or 4 days. Once you get one project done and gone, i normally am not able to get on to a new project immediately. This is one such day. In the end, even though i think that i should work only 5 or 6 hrs. each on the weekend, it happens that i work 10-12 hrs. on weekends too to meet the deadline
