Good for you! Seriously I'm surprised that it took you so long and it was only after the push you got from other CD members that you have now decided to get up from your comfort zone and look for a new job.

Anyway, all the best in your job hunt! And beware of using the internet too much while at work - especially if you're going to hunt for jobs.

ps: You don't really have to publish your every move in CD, including what you had for breakfast!

Hello CD members,
Just wanted to update you on the progress.
I applied to 15 firms last week who were looking for similar qualities and experience that i have from the website of Ontario Asso. of Architects. I got one rejection letter. The other 14 have not responded. I was not able to apply through HRDC Job bank and Workopolis.
I was thinking of applying to Buffalo, USA to see how the response is. I can shift to hamilton and then daily commute to Buffalo. I am sure that they respect much more professional people. I will apply during this long weekend. Has any CD member worked in Buffalo? Can they tell me of the situation there, border crossings etc...

Hello guys!
Today i atteneded an interview in a small firm for the post of an Architect/Technologist. I reproduce what happened in the interview for the benifit of CD architects in Canada and / or India. What i am going to say is just my experience and my view and so please donot insult me.
My experience:
I was called for an Interview by a 7 staff firm. The firm is headed by a husband and wife team. They are near Dundas West station. In my bio-data , i clearly mentioned that in Canada , i had only residential work experience and their advt. was for Custom residences, commercial, institutional buildings. They had sent me a separate e-mail asking me for salary and i had asked them 45K for payroll and 42K for contract. The lady architect who interviewed me tole me that the office hours was 9-6 (w/ 1 hr. lunch), annual salary, no overtime money, though if work demanded it we need to work overtime. Since money was not given, she said that she will time off for hours worked extra.
She was impressed by my indian work, and she asked me the meanings of "sitout", "why are indian stair cases so big?","why do you provide windows for every room"?,"why does the kitchen have a separate wash?".
She showed me some of her office work, which was not so bad. I also saw some drawings that she made and it was not at all hard to do. She told me that she is looking for a guy to work for a school project that she was designing in Bayview/Don mills. She wanted some one to do the working drawings. I made up my mind NOT to take the job (mentally) for these reasons .
1. I never like to work in a husband-wife architect office and a small office of 7 people, b'cos they will always be behind your back, and make your life miserable.
2. Small office means that they will make you work late hours, the management will always see when you come and go, you will pick your own garbage etc...
3. office projects did not look too big and i had serious doubt about their financial situation
4. Working with a lady head architect can cause a lot of tension/ ego problems.
5.since it was a very small office, they will let you handle complicated stuff and you get into problems at the site / with the contractors etc....

The lady architect was impressed with my work/ability but i repeatedly told her that i did not have any institutional experience in Canada and i was not aware of Canadian steel structural system. She thanked me for being frank. I could have lied to get the job and then have learnt about the system while being employed but i had rather work for a known enemy than an unknown angel. She then asked me if i liked Toronto/Canada. I blasted this country and told her the reasons why i was stuck here (which i donot want to tell the board for the fear of insults from members) but i made a point to her about the rotton system here.
She told me that she will let me know the answers in about a week. In the meantime, i am going to pass information about this office to 2 people that i know and i invite anyone in the CD forum who would like to apply for this job. If any of you really want this job i can coach you personally about the questions that you will be asked there and what kind of drawings they expect to see.
TK
Sidenote 1 : The lady architect said that "oh! your last name sound like French, I did not know that it was Indian"
Sidenote 2 : She asked if my employer was an Italian to which i said he was.

Dear CD members !
The last 2-3 years of my job in Canada has been hectic. I was working 6-7 days a week and 10-14 hrs. a day. The last 5 months even more horrible since i came from vacation in india. The last 12 days has seen me very depressed and i am unable to concentrate on my work (though i have work it is not very urgent work and there is no deadline). I donot feel any liking towards my present job.The situation especially worsened after i had made up my mind to go to "Doorsopen" last weekend but then my boss came on friday 3:00 pm and gave me a job to finish on monday morning. I spent the weekend at my office. I was specifically after that i feel that i am facing a "Burn out" situation. The last few days i have been thinking of just walking out of my office, be on welfare and then look for another job in 2 or 3 months from now on. However i am hesitant to walk off due to various personal reasons.
I am looking to other CD members if they have expeienced similar circumstances (only burn out situations) and how they got out of it. Is this an indication that i need to move on to another job ASAP and that i need a change in the office atmosphere?. Coffee does not help me nor do i smoke or drink or do drugs.
TK
Sidenote : in fact my boss has been telling me ocassionally to go home early, specifically tellling me that i might get "burnt out". I was unable to go home early due to various deadlines. also my boss will tell this on thrursday night and then give me work on friday afternoon to be ready on monday morning.

Burnout is related to not setting appropriate boundaries and giving oneself time to be 'off duty'.

You have indicated in the past that you work extremely long hours - you are definately a candidate for burnout.

If you feel a vacation would help - then book one. If not, and it is the job, then look for alternate employment .

Thats just my 2 cents. Based on your above comments regarding working for a woman - do you think you would change ur views if the right job came along? Because you are narrowing down your opportunities.

Thank you for your reply MR. You had told almost exactly what i thought. Working continously withour appropriate breaks are the main reasons for this. However it is too late to reflect on past mistakes. I hope that i will give appropriate breaks from now on im my work.
based on my past experiences and knowledge passed on to me by my friends (only in the field of architecture/ designing), i would not work in a company where my salary would be paid a woman (and + her husband). I may give it a try if i was out of job and if i wasdesparate for a job. Also i get paid around $13 an hour. if that lasy offered me $20-$25 an hour , i would not have taken it. but anything above $25 an hour and in cash, i might have taken the job.The second worst thing (in the same field) is working for a one man office. This is just my personal view and i apologise if i hurt someone's feeling.
The main reason for my statement is that Architecture / designing is a very subjective field (not objective). It is very very hard to convince a woman about your design when compared to a man. Women (in arch./designing) are very picky and some days there are not in a good mood and they scream at the design done by a man/female. Even females find it very difficult to work with a lady arch./designer boss. i worked with a lady boss in A'bad and she used to scream the hell out esp. with the female staff. Then the female staff would be sobbing in the washroom (not to be seen as crying before us).
Other CD designers of this forum can back me up on this.

sidenote : Just after i made this statement that i will take appropriate breaks, i reaslised that today morning my boss gave me a project which i have to do site plans/ streetscapes for 100 houses. It is an urgent project plus i have to do my old pending list of site plans from previous plans which is another 50 houses. He has given me a part time junior helper. One site plan will take 1 day of my time and the projects gets finished in around 6- 12 months for completion, Plus i also have to do projects that may come in after this and which are urgent. i donot know if i can take the breaks that i am desparately in need of.
