Lana,
Thank you for your reply.
Based on your reply, i assume what my manager once said to us " If some one sues us b'cos of your mistake in the job, we will then sue you" was just to frighten us. In that case i am happy. B'cos till now i was thinking that she was seriously threatening us and it made no sense to me working for $12.5 an hour with a potential liability of 10's of thousands of dollars. Already the boss told me that my mistakes cost him over 40K in the 3 1/2 years that i have been working here.
I would be glad if others speak about this in this forum.

TK: are you looking for alternate employment ?
Its hard to believe that in GTA, there are no other firms looking for someone with your experience.

hello!
Somehow i am always at the middle of controversies in any place that i work. In saudi, i was hired by an employer making aluminum doors and windows (which i knew nothing of when i was employed). After 6 months of employmenyt, i still knew nothing and my manager (a malayalee) went to india on vacation. an important project came up and i was asked to design the dies of aluminum doors and windows. In saudi, no one could speak against the owner. i designed 6 dies and one of them was wrong and we were hard pressed for time. The employer/owner said thatt i cost hims40K saudi riyal loss and that he was going to deduct it from my salary. He did not but after that he threatened me many times. I was lucky to escape from there. Those were tension filled days. To a receptionist, he told him to work for 14 hrs. a day (normal 8 hrs. a day) and when he refused sent him to police who beat him. he then agreed to work for 14 hrs. a day. He went to india on vacation and did not come back. This owner also had the ability to abuse you infront of indian labourers working in his factory.

In North America it won't get that worse. Well, yea, if it gets, then it would get legally !

Regarding working additional hours, those are additional hours only if you can prove it. If you can't prove it, then it's just within those 8 hrs/day.
I always try to document any work that's beyond the 8th hour.
Additional hours, OT, they vary by defination and by type of work. Sometimes they are part of your regular job profile. Sometimes they are "assumed" sometimes they are "not-supposed" to be.

Tourist,
I would like to ask you if you consider $12.5 a good salary for drafting of houses, discussion with town and consultants, engineers. In GTA , this is the max. you can get if you are not a employer yourself.
How is Vancouver when compared to this? How would you rate job prospects there?

Sidenote : There is a clever egyptian architect in my office . he is atleast 3 times better than me. Till now (6 years) he has not made a single mistake in our office. the only drawback is that he is 60 years old and the boss is exploiting this age factor. He is paid, the same as me. I introduced 3 clever architects in my office. one of the best one in that group is paid $11.75 in that. he was paid $9 in his last office (an architect's office doing much more than housing- but it was a one man's office). I know many talented architects in theGTA not employed in their line of profession and earning $8 or so in labour jobs.

Morning rain,
Thank you for your advice for me to look for alternate job.
Unless i get employment with the Govt. or some multinational companies (which is 100% sure that i canot get) all other home making offices come with the same liabilities and salary. i am of the opinion " To rather work with a known devil rather than with an unknown angel". The profession is like that. Consultants make much less money than corporations. The profession is set up in such a way that it will always favour the employment of " Gora's" than talented immigrants.
I welcome people to dispute my claim or give me some other avenues of search for employment. For those who donot know, i am currently a Canadian citizen without a Canadian passport. (not yet applied, but otherwise eligible)

Just a piece of small suggestion.

You should either try from here or consider visiting U.A.E once you get your passport. Depends on luck and other factors you may make good progress I have seen draftsman earning very well there.
