Hi TK,
I feel sorry for your predicament. Try to convince your boss that you cannot work overtime for free and that you do not agree to takes days off in lieu.
Design work can be very stressful and you certainly can’t work for such long hours without being paid extra money. You will end up taxing your health and though you may not realize it now it will definitely affect you in the long run.
Since you have enough experience can’t you set up your own consulting business here?
Try doing it part time in addition to your regular job and if you are successful then you could do it full time.
Do other employees in your office also work the same number of hours that you put in? If not then your boss is discriminating against you. Here is the link for Ontario’s Ministry of labor regarding hours of work and overtime- http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/es/factsheets/fs_hours.html
And please do keep posting in CD we do like reading your posts and I am honest about it.
Nikhil
Thanks for the encouraging/ inspiring reply.
I have taken enough of Crap from my office for the past 40 months. Initially i worked for long hours on my own interest since my boss gave me a chance to work in the field of drafting while all others gave me only hard labour jobs. I had told him that i will be sincere and put some hours extra on the job to be more accustomed to Canadian practices. We have had some 9-5 work in the past but for 2 years now , he is making me work 7 days a week 10-14 hrs. a day.
The more sincere and hard working you are, he exploits more. There are people in the office who work from 9-5 but most of them donot know proper english, and their drawing skills are bad and they are left as a sort was washout in the firm (though their salary is comparable to mine). we also have an indian couple who work for late hours (being sincere) but not on weekends as they take 1 1/2 hours to come from vic. park to our office . (they wake up at 5:45 am every day and reach home at 9:00 pm).
Of late, i am in deep financial truoble and am living pay cheque to pay cheque. This is another reason for my not moving elsewhere but the way the idiot is doing i seem to have no other option except moving out soon.
I am a consultant now and so canot take any labour action.
I canot work part time in addition to the job that i have since i have no time. This profession is saturated. Therefore setting out on my own is of no use. There is cut throat competition and legal implications are many. I would not want to venture alone.

I think you have two engineering degrees (bachelor and master degree) specialised in Architecture discipline. I am surprised to see your postings on your work related issues. Did you ever talk to any lawyer in Toronto about your boss action?

mag,
I have just one degree. It is a 5 year degree.
Even if i speak with a lawyer , what is the use? (anyway, i am a consultant now). Even if i was employed, the max. punishment under ESA rules (practically), is that they will warn my boss and put me on EI. Ultimately, i will be at loss. If you see my previous posts in this thread, you will see what actually happened.
It is not easy to get this kind of jobs elsewhere and that is the reason for my predicament. So many talented people in this profession are either unemployed or in labour jobs.
My boss is still busy (remember , he also work 15 hrs. a day, 7 days a week) but i am going to tell him that he has to give me rest. As i told before, i have tremendous financial commitments.

TK,
Have you given a thought of moving to a smaller city ? It may be possible that there may not be enough competition for you in such places.
Nikhil
After all, it's just a job. It's not your life.
I really hate this. But TK, reality is no fantacy. Try to live in present.

Hello i5a,
Thanks for the message. Yes. I have been compaining a lot recently. I will try to limit it. I posted it so that it sort of becomes an individuals experience and may be it might help someone not to be like me. That was the intention.
Also I have a Plan A and a Plan B to counter this but i was hoping from the CD's Plan C,D,E etc...
Already Nikhil had proposed that i move to a smaller city which is not possible for me due to some comittments.
There are some Architects, Planners, Designers etc.. in this forum and my experience would be of help to them.
