Thanks for the welcome.
No i dont have the list...
will it help me understand how ppl speak here better?
also watch TV. You will know the local vocabulary. Since TV is visual medium, you will know what the word means.
hi,
Welcome to Canada.
I want to tell you that your feeling that these women look down upon you is not because you are from india. The norm here is that if you go to a 'CLASSY' store then your attire says a lot about the kind of service you will recieve. This has nothing to do with you being Indian... even the westerners receive the same treatment. LIke if you go to buy Chanel perfume and u r dressed in a simple jeans and t-shirt, you'll not be received well as if you were dressed up more. This happen in India also so I wouln't feel so bad
Also, there's just a general thought amongst people here that most foreigners are not really into spending big bucks so when we do go and try to look and ask, in their mind we are just window shopping and won't buy and thus they don't want to spend a lot of time on us. Again, this is not just a bias towards indians but a sales technique. Why would a sales person spend time on someone not buying as opposed to a potential customer? And this again is not just of Indians but generally of immigrants who initially are not lookng to spend a lot as tehy want to settle down and get established.
One thing to know however is that no one can make us feel inferior except our own fears. When we come to a foreign land, we are scared, confused and these feelings translate to oh that person thinks I am not good enough. I'm sure that in time, you'll feel just as confident as all the other women here and don't feel intimidated by anyone. We have the power to control how we feel that don't let that power get weakened by your perception of what others may be thinking.
About the accents, like was mentioned earlier, the best thing to do is try to take classes or try to go an volunteer somewhere where you'll have a lot of public interaction. TV is a good way to lean and understand the accent. Watch the news regularly.
Take Care and Good Luck Avanti
