I am writing on behalf of my beloved wife, Mona who suffers from a relapse of Leukemia, which is a cancer of blood cells. Her doctors have told us that her only chance of survival is through a successful bone marrow transplant within the next two months.
Unfortunately, no matching donors were found in the immediate family. According to the doctors, Mona's best chance now lies within the Asian Indian community, where someone (1 in 1000) is likely to have matching human leukocyte antigens (HLAs). HLAs are proteins found on the surface of white blood cells and other tissues that are used to match donor and patient. At the present time, very few Asian Indians are registered with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). Therefore, Mona's prospects of finding a matching bone marrow tissue are severely limited. If you are reading this letter and would like to help, please register yourself as a donor.
The registration process is simple and the testing involves receiving a finger prick to draw a small and quick blood sample. From the finger prick, HLA-type is determined and entered into the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. If a preliminary match is found later, you will be notified and more testing will be done. You will then make a final decision whether to become a lifesaving marrow donor. There is no cost for the test if you are an Asian Indian.
Please donate. Your donation could mean the gift of life to Mona and others suffering from a similar predicament.
