Since it was the opening week of Da Vinci Code, I was unsure of getting a ticket. Also, I was not too keen of buying the ticket, only to find myself sitting in the front row and staring at the huge screen.
So I decided to watch Mission Impossible III. But to my surprise, the show has been sold out, and so instead of going back home, I tried my luck buying tickets for "Da Vinci", and to my surprise, they were still available. But hadn't I been in the theatre at the right time, I would have not been able to get the seat in the back row of the theatre.
Anway, the critics prove themselves wrong again. If opening collections of any movie are a barometers of its quality, than the box-office collections of Da Vinci code speak for themselves. The second best opening next only to Star Wars.
I haven't read the book, nor I am familiar with the European history, so I do not know as to how much justice, the scriptwriter has done to the original story, but as a thriller, Da Vinci Code is succsssful in making you glued to your seat for two and half hours.
The strength of the movie lies in its script. The direction and photography are excellent. The sights of London and Paris are a visual treat for somebody who has not visited those places. The movie moves at a satisfactory pace - not to slow to test your patience, nor too fast to leave you baffled.
The only minor disappointment is in form of Tom Hanks, as his character does not demand any extraordinary acting abilities. Having said that, it does not mean that even Adam Sandler or Ban Affleck would have been able to play the character of Robert Langden, but maybe it is the script and the story, that puts restrictions on the character of Tom Hanks.
On the whole, the movie was fully worth my $8.95 and two and half hours of my Sunday evening. I would not mind watching the movie again.

Thanks for the update. Prior to the film opening to the Public, Media(based on preview shows) had reported that the movie was not as good/ Suspenseful/ Dramatic/ nail biting as the book but the Public have proved it otherwise.

Since you haven't read the Novel, you're able to enjoy the Movie.
Like me, there may be many (Including the Critics) who can't really enjoy once after reading the book.
The same way you got glued to the seat, I got glued to my couch when I picked this book to read. The book was good not because its a thriller but controversial subject.
Try "The Broker" from John Grisham if you like some thriller (if you're aware of the American Political system and bureaucracy out there..).
The flocking crowd is the result of Controversy not otherwise... I sometimes feel its sort of the same old movie trick...

From what i have heard its not as impressive as the book was. & i have read the book and its very riveting. But even though the movie isnt as impressive i still aim to catch a show soon when its not so busy.
I hear the character of Silas took 2.5 hours for makeup each day for his Albino character.

Yeah. But it managed to collect 224 million worldwise inspite of poor review. So people really do not care about what those stupid critics have to say about movie. They gave thumbs down for Titanic too.
Well for all the controversies and bad reviews, I still believe it is a good thriller
My whole rant is against the critics - be it Bollywood or Hollywood. I do not understand what they are taught in school. But any "artsy" movie that is hard to understand or sit through, gets 5 stars, and whatever made for "common" public gets a thumbs down.
Agreed that I also do not prefer movies made by directors like David Dhawan, there are still many directors who are successfully able to tread on the line between classy and commercial, and still make good movies. For Bollywood, it is Gulzar, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Mansoor Khan or Nagesh Kuknoor. For Hollywood, it can be numerous such as Quentin Tarantino, Brian De Palma etc.
