One of my Pakistani friends told me about an incident some years ago when we were working in an African country. This was about a visiting president from a developed country who had told his Pakistani counter part that he could not imagine the situation where majority of his countrymen are illiterate like in Pakistan of that time , meaning that how difficult to run a country with so much low literacy. Infact in the Indian subcontinent ,it is the main reason why we had many villions and some jokers became presidents, prime ministers and chief ministers for Pakistan, India and their neighbors as well.
Indian examples are Sanjiv reddy, Indira, Jail sing, VPsingh, Mulayam, Lalu, Jyoti basu ,NTR, JAYA( batchan, prada, lalita )across all parties . I think people like Narayan murthi or Ajim premji. work for themselves not for any others’ prosperity. People like them never washed others' toilet . That could be the reason Narayan murthi likes Gandhi, the most.

Indian reservation system ,possibly, is meant to abolish illiteracy, considering in general ,some of the castes oppressed for centuries, in the past, denied education by the forward communities. Like blacks in America, these castes spent generations to serve the Indian society.UNDOING IS A MUST . Now it is time to abolish the inequality and bring in universality.

VP Singh and of late Arjun Singh seems have gone one step to use this as cheap trick to get advantage over their political opponents Rajiv and Manmohan respectively. Had Arjun and or VP have so much love for them ,they should have reserved some of their off-springs to get marry to the OBCs .

I also dis agree with these anti reservation activists. They should ask to open more schools where every one gets opportunity.

A good leadership should make every one happy.

I have few tips.
1. Opening sufficient number of schools that can accommodate all irrespective of the caste one is of. India now has enough resources to do that.
2. Allow and encourage private sector open the schools
3. Let every state have 5 iits and 5 aiims , 50 iims.

4. No student who utilized their backwardness for the admission should be allowed to leave the country for green pastures. The reservations are meant for India so they should serve the country.
5. All political heads should get the services from the backward caste professionals and get their children married to them. VP Singh should not go to London for his cancer treatment. He should get it from Baster Primary health center under an OBC/SC/ST. All idiots like PM and Presidents present and past should do the same to show their solidarity .
6. All political parties which support the reservations should Reserve their top posts within the party for back ward communities .
I would like CDs to add more to this list

I agree with Rajuu and his points for reservation system. This is the main reason that I have chosen to be in USA. In India everything from schools, colleges and governmental jobs are partly reserved for SC/ST and other communities. For the rest of the spots you need to know some one higher up or have lots of money.

I feel sorry for the so called upper classes whose contribution to the country has not been recognized yet.

Wake up - its not too late. A simillar proposition in California by the minorities was defeated by the voters some years ago. Perhaps Indians should have the propositions and let voters decide.

And did you say Meghal was 'hitting' somebody?

Yes, I am sure, as I was there at that time. It happenned around 1986-88 (I am not sure about the year). It was not OBC, but student from SC/ST category. After, that year, they had made 25% minimum marks compulsory.

R u sure about this, cuz getting admission on -ve points totally nullifies the idea of conducting exam.
if they have to admit on -ve points then whats the point of conducting those exams n wasting money n time over it.
i know about one such incident
REC, allahabad conducted exam and none of the reserve class ppl were able to qualify the exam, so the exam was reconducted for reserve category ppl and then the ppl who qualified were given admission.
i guess for reserve class ppl there is a minimum marks criteria to qualify which is lower than the general class but i dont think so that any univ. has given admission to ppl with -ve marking.
i think its a lie or rumour.

TK, do you know, when this guy Arjun Singh was chief minister of Madhya Pradesh (I think in late 80s or early 90s), student from SC/ST had got admission in engineering college at -ve marks in total (-ve marking). Remember at that time engineering seats were limited & not many private colleges too like now-a-days. After that year, they made compulsory that student should get atleast 25% marks (& removed -ve marking, as I remember)

Whatever the reason, if numerous studies do find a need for reservations, the total reservation for any job/institute/post should not exceed the actual percentage of population. I doubt that 50% of India is SC/ST/OBC...if the % is 10% then a total of 10% reservation should be allowed.

Another failure of our system is that the judiciary cannot do anything about this...:( ...even though it is an injustice to the majority of the country.

My heart out goes to all those Medical and Engg graduates whose careers are at stake.

I only agree with reservation based on financial restrictions. For government that wants to remove caste system, its doing rather a dismal job by making young students and people from general class feel alienated and opressed by the OBC and SC/ST.
For me everybody is equal and should be treated so. the only difference in my eyes is the difference between poor and rich.

The latest is that the BJP which had supported the reservation, has done a U-Turn and has asked for a relook at the policy.

The amazing thing about this is that the whole policy is being based on a Caste Census done by the British in 1931. For some reason the Governmente does not want do a census now.

If we take a step back and look at this whole issue with a unbiased view and with a global view we would realize that there is something more fundamentally happening all over the world.

The observations you would make is that it is a global phenomenon.Look at the US immigration issue. The mexicano's about 12 million(about 3% of the US population) will be US citizens in the near future. The US states of California and Florida will be predominantly Spanish and hence you will need to know Spanish- and there goes your TOEFL, TSE & TWE for future education in USof A.

The politicians are the same all over the globe. All want to protect their vote banks. If you look at the reason why many of us the Desis are here it is again to the Liberal vote bank politics. Hence the protection of the vote bank could be by immigration, reservation or even Genocide as in Rwanda, Dafur or elsewhere in Europe.

There is a clear cut powershift happening. This is due to re-allocation or rise in economic wealth and due to IT - as information travels faster and is mostly uncensored.

In India the Brahmins in erstwhile times were the keepers of the Knowledge, which was handed over from one generation to the other. In todays world the knowledge domain cannot be controlled. The whole world has access to it by the click of a button.

The whole world is shifting from a knowledge based society to a skill based society. We need to realize it and change our ways to suite it. The future employment and opportunities will be all short term and skill based.

If we look below the surface and study what is happening in India/China it will be an eye opener for many of us. In India the so called forward castes are all in very small numbers and also have small families. They will not count in numbers in the near future. While the rest are having larger families and hence they would be of larger numbers. There is a social tension brewing between the Dalits and the OBC's. The classic case in Tamil Nadu is between the Thevars and the Dalits. In the next few years you will find the Dravidian parties completely deccimated, while parties like Dalit Panthers and the PMK's the key players. The same thing is happening in UP, Bihar and many northern states where there is a steady build up of tensions between Dalits and the Bhumihars. These will be the future of India, either we like it or not.'

The Dalits are asking a question to many of us, and I would like you to answer it to them. The question when India gives you all subsidized education in areas like Medicine, most of the FC doctors want to shift to US or Uk for FRCS and then continue staying there or practise in cities only. They really should be helping the poor and down trodden in villages. I know for a fact in many villages the Doctors and the Teachers are kept on pedestal and very well respected.

I had called into a tele talk TV program recently in Canada which was discussing about the shortage of the Doctors in Ontario. The host of the program was mentioning that there are many without a family DR, while some have to drive about 5 hours to visit their family DR. The DR from Ontario said that we need more nurses, as the DR's were bogged down with routine work, while the representative from the Ontario DR's association was mentioning that there are many DR's who have migrated to USof A due to lucrative careers, and hence economic incentives running to millions of $ have to be offered to them to lure them back to Ontario. The lone Desi on the panel was the head of the foreign trained DR's association, who said that his association had a membership of a few hundreds, with many trained in UK, who can practise in UK, but are unable to penetrate the Ontario/Canadian medical system. Hence it all boils down to everybody protecting their turf from competition.

Hence more in numbers, more the say you have.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
