thanks hchhena for ur input - but i feel sad my friend is trapped under them - i dont know how to convince him to see the true picture. They show u rosy picture of cheap phone lines, video phones etc- most of people who attended the seminar yesterday were seniors, layoffs guys and those doing odd jobs.

VoIP is not and can not be at par with a land line as far as voice quality is concerned for a very simple reason that VoIP uses packet transmission on a shared pipe line whereas land line is dedicated one to one communication .

Also, if you don't have landline, you cannot get DSL high-speed internet. You are limited to cable Internet.

They have something called Dry Loop DSL which can be had without paying for phone service. You need to pay little extra... i think about $2.50 per month.. which is usually waived if u call the customer service and tell them u want to switch.

Not sure who gives dry loop DSL for $2.50.

Teksavvy's rates start from $7.25 per month for Band A to $25.10 for Band G plus $19.99 activation fee. You have to call them to get your band rate. You pay this over your regular internet bill to get dry loop.

Fido sorry but your statement is incorrect.
Rogers home phone is built on a VOIP backbone and uses packets for voice transmission over their cable network.

Your definition of landline is restricted to the analog copper lines e.g. Bell Canada.

And for the very same reason I was forced to change over to Bell analog land line today - the quality of Rogers was/is inferior. Try Bell .
