Not really, I'm in agreement with "Fido" on this.
I have friends, co-workers who have VOIP phones and the voice quality is definetely inferior to good ol' landline.
Also, if they are using their computer at the same time and start uploading a large file, then you can forget about the phone conversation.
It starts to sound like talking on a cell phone while on a train going through an undeground tunnel.
Not that I work for Bell or anything :p

Plus the signal was not clear in the other room away from the cordless main unit ............. When complained the Rogers people incl their service technician gave me crap about fire wall blocking signal ....... Now with Bell I experience no such problems and the sound quality is much superior ............

I am happy I switched over to Bell after 8 months with Rogers and I can hear the difference .

1) 911 is not a reliable service with VOIP. With vonage (dont know about others), you have to fill out a form with your address that helps the 911 operator to locate you. The system used with the landline does the location search automatically i.e. it can locate you based on where you are calling from.

2) You will not have Voip service if your internet is down or if the power goes out (though this is mitigated by some phone adapters that have backup batteries for a few hours).

Mind you, I like the technology and also use it for long distance (I use skype for calling within Canada and the US and absolutely love it). However, it is a poor replacement for a landline if you consider the above reasons.

Hey Ash_Canada.... doesn't Vonage have the 19.99 basic for 500 minutes free all over north america.... Its the best I have ever seen and my bill does not come more than 22cad a month.....

I am switching to http://www.themagicjack.com" rel="nofollow">LINK for outgoing now..... its 20$ a year and free outgoing to anywhere in US and Canada.....

What do you think about it?

It may be cheap but I don't like it for the reasons I have mentioned in my post. I want a foolproof service in the event of an emergency. Furthermore, VOIP quality is at the mercy of the internet service provider. Also, it don't work when there are power outages (some routers have battery backup .. so they will work for a few hours)

If you don't have any of these concerns, VOIP is a good bet.
