Dubai has become a very expensive place , i know we canot compare pros and cons with all the countries but as said Dubai is cheaper fuel wise etc and its true but parking is expensive u need 600 USD for annual Pass for parking and also the unecessary fines you get without reasons .... It all adds up to the same keeeping in mind the salaries dont and the standard of living does not ......

In Western countries u are paid by hours not monthly unlike here and africa and India .... I am sure people who live in the west can afford things which a person living here cannot....

No complains but its just a reasoning and the reality , i know canada is not a better place , i have lived there and struggled there as well and now in UAE i can compare between the two ....

My monthly office parking is $100/- ~ Dhs 300/-

My monthly car Insurance is equal to my annual car insurance in the Gulf .

I pay 45% taxes (30% salary and 15% GST/PST/HST )

I pay $8/- (Dhs 25/- for a dosa ) as compared to Dhs 5/- .....

Electronics and other consumables are more expensive here and better quality is available in the GCCs .

Not comparing rent , almost everything here is thrice as costly as the Gulf .

But defintely so is the freedom and cold also :) Thrice as much

Dont know where you stayed in Duabi & where you stay here in Canada.... but rental in dubai is way too expensive.

A two bed room apartment used to cost Dh. 60,000 per year in Bur Dubai a few yers back ...... that is roughly CAD 1650 and on top of that had to pay another Dh 400 or Dh 500 for the utilities. So dont know what you mean rental are expensive in Canada. I found the renatals preety reasonalble of all the thinsg. Another expense was school for kids.Average yearly fees & other expenses for school would be anywhere in the rnage of Dh 5000 to Dh. 8000 per child.

Dubai had started getting expensive when we relocated there in 2004 and by the time we left the next year it had become more expensive. The average renatals jumped almost 25% during this time. Also they cancelled the free health care & at that time they used to charge Dh 80 just to see a doctor

Here is a search I did for one condo in Singapore where my friend is moving next month. Yesterday he had told me that within a year the prices have doubled and I could not believe it.

He is moving into an apartment of size 1894 sft. This apartment was renting for about $2,000 (US$1,250 at that time) in early 2006. Next month he is moving in renting at S$3,400 (US$ 2,236)

He wanted to buy this apartment in October since one of his friend had bought it in early 2006 for about 500K. In May 06, one of the sales was for 530K and in Jan 07, the sale was for 778K. Today's asking price is around 900K as per my friend.

And this is a 25 year old building in Singapore - quite old according to Singapore standards and not much sought after! Imagine the rate of rise for newer buildings!!!

Do you guys see a similarity in Dubai?

Well yah its true rents have gone up actually i moved here in UAE ( Dubai ) in 2004 where all the rise had started and u saying 60000 Dhs for 2 bedroom is definately true but that was i n 2004 , i am renting a studio and its costing me 50K Dhs and 5 % Housing tax on my Contract Annually and also Utilities etc adding to 500 Dhs .....

At present a 2 bedroom is anywhere between 90K to 150K . My cousin she had a 3 bedroom flat just behind Burjuman Mall she was paying 160K Dhs for yr and then she said too much and moved into 2 bedroom which is near Lamcy Area ( Oud Metha ) and she is paying for 2 bedroom 110K Dhs plus utilities extra .

I do not know where this rise is going to lead everything here but hope its for something better ....

Sharjah rentals would be in the range of 35-40,000 for a 2 BHK.... now a lot of people are going further to Ajman for cheaper rentals. But the problem used to be traffic..... it would take an hour to travel from sharjah to dubai in the morning rush hour. Even though the same could be done in half the time during the day.
