Drivers License in CANADA

Hi,

Few questions I have as I want to move to Windsor from Detroit and I will daily commute from Windsor to Detroit for work.

- Do I have to surrender US Driving License when I apply for the Ontario Drivers License in Windsor?

- I want to buy a new car in Canada, do I have to have Canadian Drivers License before I can buy it and what about the car insurance if I do not have Canadian Drivers License.

I appreciate your answers.

1) Yes. You effectively exchange your U.S. license for the Canadian one. This way you get a G license straight away without giving any tests.

2) I'm not a 100% sure on this, but IMO you do need a Canadian license to purchase an automobile here.

Yes !
They will take it from you and return to the state DMV in the US that issued the license.
The database of US state DMVs and Canadian province MTO are connected so they can easily see each other's information.
The moment you go to Ontario MTO, they will know that you have a US license.

You will need Canadian license to get Canadian insurance.

If you transfer with the same insurance company (assuming they do business in Canada), they will probably write you a policy, but will require you to get a Canadian license within 30 or 60 days.

If you are getting fresh insurance, it is very likely that they will ask you to have Canadian DL at the outset.

Hi Pratickm:

Firstly congrat for your new responsiblity in this excellent site. Can you tell me if I can tranfer my dubai driving license to G license in Canada? In Dubai anyone can transfer Canadian license to Dubai driving license (there are 42 countries which enjoy this facility).
