Greetings All,
Would anyone know of a good tax consultant in the Durham, ON area (Ajax / Whitby / Oshawa). I dont want to go to the HR block or anysuch where they simply enter numbers into their tax software but someone who has suggestions.

Thanks in advance fellow members.

Unless you are a sole propreitor or work in multiple countries(eg. Canada and UAE) you will not need a tax preparer. Most are a waste of money and worse. Some can even get you into trouble by being "aggressive" with your deductions. Some of them are selling other products too like RESPs , segregated funds, LSVCs , etc. and they are unprofessional. They get angry if you don't buy something from them. Some are downright criminal and steal your identity info.(I'am not kidding , this happened to my friend , he went to a tax preparer in Toronto, two years later he got notice from CRA that he hadn't declared 7,000 dollars in income from some XYZ Inc. where this guy had never worked! Turns out that this tax preparer sent the SIN and other info of all his clients , mostly low wage immigrant slaves , to some construction company owned by his relative)

Seems like your experiences with tax preparers is pretty sour, and sorry to hear about your friend's experiences too.

With a handful of bad apples you cannot assume that the entire consignment is bad.

Do not gerenalize the things. Most of the tax preparers are good, honest and know how to handle a client's affairs. Is there anything wrong selling other products? This is apart of profession. Most of the preparers try to educate the tax payers. But, nothing comes free. Tax payers do not want to pay for their time. Mostely they want to pay just $20-50 (in Desi community) and demands for a larger refund.

What does one expect from a tax preparer by paying mere $20-50? Before going to any tax preparer find about his /her education, experience, client base, relaibility and be ready to pay for his/her time and you will get the correct advice at correct time.
