I am a new immigrant and want to select any of the following for initial settlement. Please suggest which of the following area is considered best in terms of house rents, survival jobs, schools and car insurance. Thanks

Peel region
Brampton
Mississauga

York region
Markham
Vaughan

Durham
Scarbourough
Oshawa

all these regions are nearby and outskirts of Toronto. Doesn't matter where you go cost of living, schools, rent and job scene is similar.

And commuting from one region to another is typical of many people. So if you live in Peel region and get a job in York .. it will become part of life very quickly. Average 1 hour commutes are common.

Thank wall, but that is not what I am after. I just want to know which area to settle in cuz I see some friends here don't rate Mississuag as right place for starters whereas some say Scarbourough and Markham are good choices. Honestly speaking I get pretty mixed opinions about which area is good to stay in all terms. Also when I look at the school rankings, I see Markham schools are pretty much on top, while Brampton schools look average. Anyone who has gone through all this thoroughly, pls come up with your suggestions. Thanks

You should go where job will take you. To start with, a new immigrant, should study the public transit map (including Toronto subway and GO transit) and chose a place near one of those stations. Remember you will not have a car in the beginning, even if you will afford one you still need to go through driving license process. Then think of getting a mobile phone so that you are contactable for interviews.

These notions of going through the school rankings , making opinions on cities, dream houses are very good to satisfy ones adrenaline of relocating to new place but will all go into shell once the reality will set in and that reality will be defined by fact that how soon you get job and where. Btw in Canada, its not schools or universities who make people like in India, it is Kids , the parents and their own effort which will take them to places, no matter where they study.

Good luck and stay strong.

Thanks San for explaining It so nicely, but my query is still unanswered :( I agree, it's mainly the job that determines your location ultimately but before that there comes a period of around one year when you land and start with the survival jobs. I guess not most of the immigrants get the jobs of their profession rightaway and start with survival jobs.

Hasni :
For jobs, It will be Mississauga.
For all other questions that you asked, it will be all places except Mississauga.

It is a catch 22 situation. You canot combine jobs with the other things asked.

If you are a new immigrants, settle in Mississauga / Etobicoke and try to find a job. Once you have a job, then you can get a mortgage for a house in a school area of your choice and drive to work.

if you have tons of money and donot actually need to work, then I recommend Markhan and Vaughan (where millionaires now live) for schooling etc.. Markhan is more high class chines where as Vaughan is mostly Italian with now desi's. I would recommend Vaughan area, provided you are able to buy a house or rent a house there. There may be no proper public transport in that area at this point in time.

your call.

Thanks Murali picture is somewhat clear now. So you think living in Mississauga one wouldn't have to struggle much finding a survival job. Would it be a good idea to land and initially stay in a short term rental. Then start the house hunt keeping in view the school ranking. I have gone through Fraser school ranking for Ontario province and can see lot of schools with ranking above 7.5. Do you agree with my approach !!
