Can someone explain to me why Dravid did not enforce the follow-on?

Looks like Dravid & Company's decision is consistent with the Indian Govt's thinking - despite all the aptitude no positive attitude; just imagine if Aussie had a lead of 319 how they would have dealt :)

the decision ensured a cheap draw when it could have won thumpingly had it shown an iota of guts;

Yeah right! Day 5 was a perfect example of that, wasn't it?

So I dont think there would be any advantage to india. India bowled 20 overs today and could not even take any wicket. What makes you think that tired indian bowlers would have bowled Enland out within 350.

How about something called the urge to win?

Reason behind not following on the england is to play safe and win the series.

Getting England to follow-on would've been a safe decision as well with a much higher chance of winning. The australian example you gave is a glaring exception, you don't build cases on exceptions.

Pratick put it perfectly, this was a shameful series victory.

Yes, that's true - it was negative cricket, and wasn't as great a series victory as they make it out to be.

Remember, we had the narrowest possible escape at Lord's with just one wicket remaining - thanks to the rain. If not for the rain, we would not have won this series either!

And the fact that we can't translate huge first innings scores like 664 here, and 705 for 7 in Sydney (2004) to a victory says something.

Just don't agree with the assessment on Tendulkar! (am one of those die-hard fans watching him from the early 90's! :)) Certainly not the best in the world any more, but still worth his weight in the team. His top score of 92 was crucial to India's win at Trentbridge, and eventually the series win.

In an interview yesterday, Dravid is quoted as saying -
I know my bowlers and team and I could not force too much from them
I think it means the following -

1. The bowlers were tired after only 1 day of fielding/bowling and did not have the stamina, the desire and the enthusiasm to enforce the follow-on and go for the kill.
They wanted to have a cool time in the dressing room, put their feet-up and sip a few iced drinks while the batsmen played defensive cricket to kill time (the Capt. himself leading the way with 12 off 96 balls ).

2. Dravid has zero confidence in India's super batting line-up that they can even score a 100 on the last day to win the game (assuming England managed to save an innings defeat and sets them a target of 80, 100 or thereabouts.

He took the easiest way out.

In fact, it's not Englad that drew the match - India drew the match for their own reasons.

What would Gabbar Singh tell Dilip Vengsarkar (Chief Selector) after this match?

Consider some facts
1. Recent Second Inning batting of Indian Stars on 5th Day Wicket
2. Zaheer was not 100%
3. This Team had some away test victories but not Series. This time around Series was there to be taken by Sacrificing the Test (for Bigger Cause :))

I can understand the reasons and decision. Having said that, I still will say that I don't agree to it. But who on earth cares. Look at the picture- they are Happy.
