Hi, Veran here from India. I am junior desi and i will be becoming part of your team in Canada in next few months. From last few days i was going through different discussions/ topics on this wonderfull site. I would love to be side with all who says that +ve attitude is a state of mind which helps the person to stand straight in situations where most others will break. It helps us to fight with more courage and with more energy when met with failure. As far as hard work is concerned i would like to differ a little. These days Intelligent work has replaced hard work. Everybody will agry with me that Donkey is doing maximum hard work among all the Animals but still Donkey can not be compared with Horse. I still recalls during one of my interviews i replied that you will not find me lacking in hard work. The gentleman told me that they don't require Donkey's.
I recall Henry ford words:
"If you say, I can, I can't, either way you are right"
Saying i can or let me try comes with +ve attitude only.

100% Positive Attitude will not work.
You have to think some nagative aspects too.
As new immigrants with CAD 10,000 balance, you should start job searching with 100% positive but when your balance reach CAD 2,000 then you have to think some nagative aspects to survive.
Only Positive appoach is not sufficient but i am agree with " Keep Positive percentage higher then Nagative "
I was unemployed in initial six months and try hard to get field job and i got it. In every case, percentage of Positive and Nagative is different and its depend on each situation. There is no rules for that.

I was following this interesting discussion for sometime. Now it's time for me to add my own thoughts.
I will begin at the beginning and try to go back to the root cause of this attitude problem.
If we start at time zero that is when we were born we would find that as human beings we are all born with only one fear-the fear of falling. All the other fears are acquired afterwards as we go through the journey of life.
We also know that we develop negative attitude because of fear. Some of the common acquired fears are: fear of falling from grace, fear of falling in societal ladder, fear of falling in self-esteem etc. etc. See the common thread of 'falling' -our inherent fear which was born with us.
So we all start with the same baggage. But some of us learn to overcome the negative with more of positive while the other remain in the negative. It is a well-known social fact that people with positive energy are more successfull, more popular and healthier.
Life's journey is full of ups and downs like stock market. To be successful in stock market one should buy low and sell high. Similarly to develop a net positive attitude one should supress negative with overwhelming positive energy.

Let me tell you my story. I used to work as a supervisor for a company along with 3 others in the same job – we used to manage about 50 staff members on shift basis. I am more educated, experienced, smart (in my opinion and the opinion of others) in doing daily routine works, organizing meetings/motivating staff, preparing reports, etc… etc… I concentrated only on my job throughout my working years with that company. My co-supervisors had good personal relation with the manager and used go out together for coffee and all…... They never missed a chance to go to the manager’s room and indulge in casual talks. I always found this ‘buttering’ as a silly thing as it had nothing to do with the actual job going-on on the floor. When our unit did not perform as expected, my manager came under pressure to do something to improve profit. To save his as.., cost cutting was an easy option for him. And you know rest of the story…. The other 3 supervisors are still working with the company.

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
What you know is not as important as Who knows you.
Whether in a job or business, long-term business is more about relationship than about what you offer. As long as you're good at what you do, who you know and their relationship with you, not what you know, is most important to your success.
This may not seem fair. But this is universally true including Canada and US.
Your story happened to me in US about 6 years ago. But I was on the other end of the spectrum. One of my desi co-worker who did exactly what I was doing was laid off, not me, even though he started working at that place couple of years before me and had more experience.
My desi-worker mentioned to me that I didn't get laid off because I go out for lunch with our boss and other co-workers frequently. Two of us were the only desis in a department of 75 mostly whites. He couldn't do the same because he was vegetarian and not many vegetarian places around.
Whereas boss pointed out to me that he recommended other person for lay off because he was not able to adapt quickly to new processes being put in place in comparison to me.
I believe one of the reason other than what my boss explained (which happened to be true as I had noticed the same in him) was because nobody knew him properly in the department. He never talked to co-workers, put forward any ideas, asked questions or came across to others as helpful.

It takes more than ‘your attitude, qualification, experience and ability’ to stay in the job. You should also consider the attitude of the decision makers in your company, your ‘relation’ with them and the company’s +ve/-ve growth.
Let me tell you my story. I used to work as a supervisor for a company along with 3 others in the same job – we used to manage about 50 staff members on shift basis. Sad part is that some of the staff whom I though are doing good job than some others had to go too.
Coming back to our topic of positive attitude ‘required only in Canada’ … I think as most of our discussions are based on Canada, Canadian immigration, Canadian desis, etc… in this context we talk about “+ve attitude in Canada”. I don’t think this in anyway mean you don’t need +ves outside Canada.
Your question is so interesting that it has complelled me to write. Positive attitude is a key factor in becoming successful anywhere in the world. I dont know why it is emphasised more in Canada, but am very happy that Canadians look at the attitude more than anything else.
What I think about positive attitude is look only at the green side, ignore the rest. This helps you to see beyond boundaries!
Someone rightly said : It is the Attitude not the Aptitude which decides your altitude.
If you convert the the alphabets of words with numbers...substitute 1 for A, 2 for B etc. then you will notice that attitude is the only word which gives a total of 100..i.e. 100 %.
One of the extreme example of Positive attitude is SIR ISSAC NEWTON. When his Laboratory caught fire destroying his years of hard work he did not cry. He summoned his wife and children and told them \" Look what beautiful colur the fire has, I have never enjoyed such colours before\"
THOMAS EDISON was complled to quit his experimentations to devise what we now call the electric bulb as he had done thousand of attempts. But he never believed he failed. What he use to reply was : I have not failed, I am successful in knowing thousands of different ways this will not work so I am so close to success.
Now I dont think without such an attitude it was possible for him to invent the electric bulb!
Do let us know your thoughts about positive attitude so that we can all learn and benefit.

Chalte Raho

Lot of members in the forum suggests new immigrants to have a positive attitude in Canada and it is treated as a BIG PLUS to settle down nicely in Canada. Now here I have few questions for them who always suggest having positive attitude in Canada.
* Can someone define the positive attitude?
* Are you trying to say that only in Canada you need positive attitude to become a successful person whereas outside of Canada you may become a successful by having a negative attitude?
*If so, than why only in Canada we need positive attitude and not in other parts of the world? As I did not hear anywhere else so much about POSITIVE ATTITUDE?
*And if we cannot become a successful person anywhere in the world by having negative attitude than why you emphasize so much on having positive attitude in Canada not in other parts of the world?
Looking forward to hear something about POSITIVE ATTITUDE!!!
Thanks and regards.
