What I understand as a layman is the difference is not only in voltage (220/110) but also what they call as Htz or cycle. Voltage is easy to manage through step up transformers - but what can give a problem is the htz. Here we have 50 htz while in India it is 60.

I was once told by an engineer that the difference in cycle creates problems for high speed moving items like mixers etc - and PERHAPS CD players but not anything else.

Hi Chandresh !
I completely agree with you ..
I had carried DVD and printer lastly ..The DVD worked fine with transformer where as printer smoked rightaway ..
The difference in prices of home theatre is almost double as of in India ( visited sites of LG and Sony ) ..
Plus on top of it for some reason I find it is easier to spend 300 dollors than 8000 RS in India ..
So I am looking forward for anyone to share his experience with home theatre from here to India ..

Most of the electronic items these days have voltage range from 100-220. That is why laptops you can take anywhere. Same goes for camcorders. The best os to check for the voltage rating for you electronic device. A lot of manufacturers make goods which are rated 100-220 V and also 50/60 Hz
So you can check the home theatre system before you buy it .

TWo things:

First, laptops, camcorders and digital camera are meant to be carried from one place to another and that is why they have voltage and cycle range for covering the whole world. Not so in the case of home theaters - they are not meant to be carried from place to place.

Secondly, it is only in Asia you will find home electronics like TV and home theaters where the voltage and cycle covers the full range. North Americans do not want that - so even a Japanese product sold in America would not have that range. You will have to go to special shops which sell multi-systems and wider voltage range and those products would have been specially imported from Asia.

Instead of taking a newly bought home theatre from Canada; how about making a shopping stop at Dubai or Hong Kong on the way? Its worth if you have some time on hand as you would save on $$ plus there are far many options/models available that are not in Canada & no hassle of voltage.
