Here's the process I would recommend.

1. Ask your wife to speak directly to the manager first if she's comfortable doing that. Tell her to get her points ready and discuss them with him to convey her discomfort at such comments. Ask her to be very specific and polite but firm. Also ask her who the employees who're complaining about her are and that next time, they should approach her directly.

2. If that does make a difference, ask her to contact HR and let them know of what's going on. Usually, HR will take things like these very seriously because they see a glaring discrimation lawsuit. They would contact the manager and set him straight right away.

3. If they do not take any action, then consult a lawyer on how to proceed.

If there are genuine issues, your wife should address them. Going by your comments though, it sounds like the manager is not a very good communicator or has some sort of agenda. Comments like "This isn't India, this is not how we do it in Canada" are unacceptable in a professional environment. HR should not take that lightly.

I agree. He sounds like a poor 'manager' if thats how he manages his people. Sounds like a liability to his employer.

-> Let me clear some points,
->Manager said that " some clients are complaining about smell not her, she also added that I don't feel like that but some people's nose are soo sensitve and then she gave her daughter's example that ..." she talked to her very politely.
-> TK, I agree with you that Canadians are not like that because I never had such kind of experience and even if they feel it they won't express their feelings..but I'm talking about couple of people.
->For 2 years, she applied for that job every month whenver there was a posting for the vacancy. Anyhow, she couldnt get chance to work but 6 months ago, I got the call from friend of mine that there is a vacancy again and if I wants that he can give reference and then we got that job.
--> we have changed our food habits at lunch time( bread and lettuce and all dry stuff) and other style, as mantioned by other CD.
But, my concern is what could be easy and simple way solve this problem.
-I believe that they want my wife to quit because they can't fire her without any good excuse

Hi Namo,

I only have one thing to say :

It's called 'systematic racism' which these goras are using since long time. Now since Indian economy is shining ( @ 9 % GDP growth per annum) like anything, they can't face it with brave heart....always looking for some excuses to ridicule/ look down upon us .

Anyways you and your wife should fight it out and prove that Indians are a strong bunch.

ALL THE BEST.

Dk

Namo,
Thanks for your message.
No one can treat another person like this in Canada. But for you to have a good response while complaining is that you need either human witnesses or the conversation on tape. Since it is a unionised job, why donot you contact the union leader for help in this regard. Even without proof, he can either change your wife's manager or your wife's department. When an Immigrant complains to a higher official about racial discrimination, the higher officials will take action b'cos they will be afraid that this may turn into a very big issue. There is a contributor by the name of "Sankaracharya" who has some very good knowledge about the workings of unionised job. You can send him an e-mail or PM and he can respond with the answers (alternatively you can PM me the query and I can call him in USA and find out and let you know).
I donot think that you should ever worry about this. But then you should give an indication to the higher ups so that the manager does not take undue advantage of you and tell lies to her superior in order to fire you.
Some basic tips for personal hygene would be (even I donot follow most of them and you donot also have to follow each one of them. But some lady Gora's in my office follows the below listed procedure)
1. Visit dentist to clean teeth atleast once in 3 months.
2. Use mouth wash after each mean
3. Floss daily
4. Use perfume on cloths or air the cloths
5. Polish shoes regularly and Wash socks atleast once in 2 days. Also put talcum power inside the shoe for good smell.
6. Use Scarf, Monkey cap, Gloves, Jerkin, Snow boots during the winter otherwise they will see us as some uneducated people. Wash them every week.
7. Have eyebrows trimmed once month, facial once a month , hair trimming once every 2 months.
8. Not use Garlic / Ginger in food
9. HAve 2 shoes. One winter show for walking and the other for inside the office use.
Hope this helped.
TK A
