Hi everyone,

I came to Canada in 2003 with my wife and my total income for 2003 is only 6500 dollars.

Kindly advise what issues I should keep in mind while calculating my tax returns and can I file it for free if my income is less that some amount.

Thanks. Regards

Bhuwan

There are various posts and a couple of articles regarding the benefits and necessity of filing income tax return. You can search for them in charcha and read article on income tax by a fellow desi. These will give you a fairly good idea and answer most of your questions.

Since your income in 2003 was under the personal exemption limit, there are chances that if you have paid any income tax, you will get ll back. However, this exemption amount is dependent on your date of arrival in Canada as it is prorated. In addition you will also get some other benefits like GST refund and Child Tax Benefit (if you have kids under 18)

You can file your income tax return for free over the internet on CCRA site, by doing it mannually, or free on the quick tax site http://www.quicktaxweb.ca/content/etc/freedom.php?b=intuit (since the income is low).

Or you can take advantage of a free return offer by a fellow desi on this site for all new immigrants, and I would suggest you to consult him or any other professional rather than doing it yourselves at least for the first time.

If nothing works, you can contact me at 416-560-6951 and I will do your income tax return for free for the year 2003.

You should file tax return for self and your spouse.

You may avail volunteer services available in canada for filing tax returns however there is no criteria of free filing on the basis of income. You may even visit tax return camp organized by CCRA (Canada Customs and Revenue Agency)

Your benefits (GST, child tax benefits, provincial and federal credits) will be prorated if not resident of Canada for full year. Similarly your tax liability will be determined.

Here is what http://www.quicktaxweb.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK has on its website.

You might be able to file for FREE!

The QuickTax Freedom program is Intuit's way of giving back to the community. If you (and your spouse, if married or common law) have a total net income (line 236 combined) of less than $20,000 you can use QuickTaxWeb at no cost, including electronic filing (if eligible).

Apart from that there is another tax software company GRIFFTAX and from their site you can download their software for free and if your income is less than $25000 you can do your return and print it for free.

You are welcome Bhuwan.

However, I would say that you should still contact some professional for advice, and if you do not get one, touch basis with me for 'free advice'
