I am planning to register for a VIN checking service. I think I have three options, but I am not sure which one is the best for buying an used car in Toronto, Canada.

1. CarFax –US$ 30 for unlimited VIN check for 30 days.
2. CarProof – looks like they charge $50 for one report.
3. Experian's AutoCheck - $25 for unlimited VIN check for 60 days.

Please suggest the best option.

carfax is good enough, be sure take a print out because after 30 days you no longer can access

Car Fax provides you money back in 30 days if you are not saisfied and have informed them with in 30 days provided you have done <3 checks.

If you are buying vehicle from someone who is selling the vehicle privately in Ontario, you can ask for Used Vehicle Information Package.

According to rules the seller should have that ready with him if he wants to sell car privately. I am copying and pasting the rules from Ontario government website:

When selling a used vehicle privately in Ontario, you must buy a Used Vehicle Information Package.

<b>Private sellers must make the package available to all prospective buyers and give the complete package to the purchaser at the time of sale. This applies to the private sale of any car, van, light truck, motor home or motorcycle.</b>

The package includes important information about a vehicle's Ontario registration and lien record, as well as the red book value and retail sales tax information.

Once a buyer is found, the seller must use the bill of sale portion of the Used Vehicle Information Package to record their name and signature, as well as the date and purchase price. The buyer is responsible for taking the package to a Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office to register as the new owner within six days of the sale and to pay retail sales tax on the vehicle.

Required Information:

* Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the vehicle being sold, or
* the licence plate of the vehicle being sold.
