Hi,

I am planning to buy a Garmin GPS from a person (advertised on Kijiji).

1. I do not know him personally.
2. According to him the GPS is brand new, never used, still in the cover.
3. He got it as a gift and does not have the bill.

Would I get the company warranty on this piece? Also are there any other downsides to buying a GPS privately?

Thanks,

MG.

I know of people who have had bitter experiences buying from Kijiji sellers. Having said that I have successfully bought from a Kijiji seller, but it was just a bicycle.

Have you tried http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums" rel="nofollow">LINK I've bought quite a few electronics from here. Check the reputation of the seller before entering into a contract, ie before buying

That is the risk you take for buying it at a low price.
Donot give a firm commitment before testing the GPS. At his house, attach the GPS and see if it works. Then if you are willing to take the risk, you can buy it. Most of them are legitimate (unless they are live Nigerian type scammers) and there is no guarentee for electronic products anyways.
I bought a DVD player for $15 from a 12 year old guy and is working just fine.
So it really depends on your luck.

Peace out

and if it has box and accessories and manuals then it should be really safe.

if it is just the unit, with no accessories/manuals box etc.
it was probably STOLEN out of a vehicle.

i once bought a dvd recorder .. no manual ... no remote ..
i go it for $100 but it did not work. my loss.

I had NUVI 680 from Costco - one of thier higher end ones - but returned it within 1 month.

1. It used it give me false directions - luckily I was travelling on a known route.
2. Its voice prompts kept telling me to take left while the pointer on the screen kept pointing right...(and I was taking the ramp to the express way).
3. It does not say street names - just turn right or left in xxx mtrs..
4. You need to update the subscription and maps everyyear.

I spoke to technical associate in Costco who agreed with me that these are problems with Garmin while other lower end models are better.

How old is your Nuvi 905Desi?

I have a Nuvi 360 for about year and a half now and have had no problems at all with the unit. Garmin makes the best GPS units out there...just read the reviews and do your research.

You may not need certain features such as bluetooth which will increase the price. Check out tigerdirect.ca. They usually have good deals on navigation units.
