I think I might be the first person to be posting on this topic for a local move - and though the section is intended for move into Canada, I see no better alternative heading for my post!!:p

I have recently bought a house and plan to move during the third week of August from Thornhill to Vaughan - a distance of about 9 kms. I am presently in a condo and moving to a detached house.

As usual, if I am paying for some services, I would like to offer an opportunity to the desi community before I go to others to look for person/s who can Professionally handle my move.

If any of you are interested in taking up this project (about 2 days) for light packing and moving all household stuff, I welcome your offer with an idea price.

Others, who are members but not professional movers, perhaps could guide me from their own experience about references, prices and precautions. I have done 7 international moves in last 10 years, but not a single local move!!!

Some tips:
ask for your movers to come in on their first shift(early morning). Other moves before you usually cause delays and you may end up waiting for a long time. Have heard of ppl waiting for 7hrs for movers to arrive. They were held up at the previous gig.

Prices should be 40$/hr(2 ppl with truck) for cheaper movers and higher for better. They will also charge for the trip to your current place and back to their office from your new home. This is how it works in Montreal.

You have great furniture so I would suggest movers with good insurance.

Pack *everything* yourself into boxes and pile them in the middle of a room so all the movers come and do is move the boxes. This could save a lot of money. Nothing(except those that fit into 3-4 plastic bags) should be packed on the day of the move. Your move itself should not last more than 6-7 hrs if you spend the week/s before packing everything into boxes.

Similarly dismantle all furniture

I used the services of a company called 'Movers International' on my move to Montreal. They maybe expensive(my company footed the bill) but are really good at both packing and professional at the move. They even packed(in layers of packing paper) a small rock that my daughter had collected an forgotten in one of the drawers.

Thats all I can think for now.

CONGRATS!! To the family and you!

Hope you all have a long, lucky and happy stay in your new permises!

Hi Chandresh,
This has nothing to contribute to you querry.
I am due to migrate from India, in 2 mths time, as I learn from the sits Vaughan is the most fastest developing area in TO with a lot of vacant land yet to be developed, you are moving to Vaughan, can you guide me from what you have searched in the area to start my settlement in that area, leaving the developed part as it could be costly.
Wishing you safe moving.

Thanks for the tips Jake.

I had moved into Canada with MI - and was satisfied with their services. Hoever, even they were surprised when they saw the packing that my things had come in - they said they could or would never do such thorough packing!! However, they are quoting way too high - $125 per hour with minimum time estimated at 10 hrs!! I was relying on them, but guess I would have to find someone else now.

Chandresh,

Are you considering UHaul? In that case you don't have to rely on professional movers.

However looking at the kind and size of furniture, you should use professional services of movers.

When I moved I used U-haul and did it myself with big circle of friends. In my case the distance was marginal (within 2 kms) and so I afforded number of trips.

Did I say 'permises' earlier :)...actually meant premises. I guess you got the idea.

I think for the stuff that you have you can expect to pay around $80/hr(minimum of 3 hrs) for decent movers.

Where you may save money is on packing and the move time involved. I'm repeating myself...and it may even be inconvenient....however, devoting 2 weeks prior to the move, to packing everything(including clothes) into boxes(and marking them for different rooms) can really help save costs on the day of the move. I have moved 3 times within Montreal(always with professional help) and have learnt this the hard way. And so, during my last move the movers were done within 5 hrs(house is 13 km from prev apt). We had spent 2 weeks before packing stuff and dismantling furniture. We had about 100 boxes of all sizes in the middle of the mainroom.
