1. A 2005 SUV (good one) will be approx. $25000 - with some mileage on it. A new one will almost be the same price with cash payment.
2. You have to pay cash or look for bank financing for second hand car. It is better to put that cash in a new car and buy it all cash.
3. All 0% offers also have $3500~$4000 further discount for cash payment. So in effect you are paying for the interest upfront.
4. Finally, NONE of the SUVs in the market compare in safety to passenger vans - SAFETY - a very important consideration for you and your family.
5. For the sake of discussion and assuming your statement that 2 years down the line all gas cars will be near obsolete (out of demand or price drop) - if you are paying the same amount of money, it should not make any difference if you buy NEW or OLD...in that scenario your loss is still the same. OTH, a newer car will still fetch you better price compared to older car.
BTW, Hyundai has current very good offers on Van and SUV -almost 1/3 price drop on 2009 models (I think) - please check it out.

I just had Drive Test on Ford Escape, Mazda Tribute , Santa fe and Nissan X-trail.
in my opinion Nissan X-trail is the best in term of quality , fuel, and resell
In Montreal i will be able to find 2005, 2006 withing 12-15K

I'll suggest SantaFE. Plenty of room and power. I only remember reading good stuff bout it.
I would have bought it - but I need 3 Rows. 3 Rows is optional (for 3k) in SantaFE only in US but not Canadian Models. How Devine !
