Mercury, I am no expert and am scared to even recommend anything. But since my uncle faced similar situation I'd like to share his experience with you.
His back started hurting real bad, doctors suggested surgery. He tried chiropractors but fouind no use then on someones suggestion he tried chinese accupuncture and it worked for him.
---AGAIN, I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THIS TO YOU AS I KNOW THE LEAST ABOUT THIS SUBJECT, i just thought i'd share it with you since i saw my uncle benefitting from it-- atleast he avoided going into surgery.
Please also take multiple opinions from those who are better informed before deciding about surgery.
Hope you get well soon my friend!

Is there anyway you can change jobs? They are not easy to come by but if you get a job where there is no lifting shifting it may reverse the pain.
Accupuncture do work as well for some.
I am not too sure but i think OHIP pays $150 per fiscal year for Chiropractic coverage. Their fiscal year is from April 1 to March 31.
