CD's,
Today morning on the way to the office, I rear ended a person's car (black ice). His steel hutch on the mudguard penetrated and put a hole in my car's bumper (right in the middle/center). Due to this my front number plate got crushed. I have given it for temp. repair and have told the mechanic to put duct tape across the hole.
We also went to the collision centre to report the accident and I got a copy of my complaint as well as his.

My queries are as follows :
1. Can I drive like this till I junk my car (in 1 year or less) without the front license plate and with duct tape on the bumper. The second hand body shop is asking for $ 400 + tax.

2. The OPP officer said that the collision report will be forwarded to our insurance companies. Will my insurance rate go up from the next renewal, though I will not be reporting to my insurance company as the deductible itself is more than the repair.

Hope some one can answer my queries.

Peace by TK

Its an offense in Ontario to ride w/o a number plate display on the front ...... it can be secured with a wire/other means , if needed as long as it is visible ....

If person, who got rear ended, claims his/her repairs from his/her insurance company, then yes. You will end up paying more for your insurance.
Whether you make an insurance claim for your car or you do not, it does not matter. You might receive letter/call from your ins company ... we received a claim against your .. blah .. blah ... blah ... your rates will go up.
Your insurance company pays to the other person's insurance company for that other person's car repair.
So again, if that other person has made a claim .. then, since any way you'll pay more on renewal, see if you can claim your expenses as well.

Advice to all CDs:

Always keep atleast 2 cars distance between your car and the car in front of you. Add extra distance for weather related factors.

Sometimes ppls get high beam, finger, honks ... but they keep that distance for some reason.

TK,

I'd check with the police but I agree with Fido (and disagree with Maharaj). You can't drive without a front license plate. Please check with the cops and avoid getting any tickets. While I was in USA, I purchased a brand new car and i didn't pay attention to the fact that the car came with only a back license plate. There was no provision for a front license plate at all and we realised this only after we got a ticket. Same rule does apply to Canada as far as I know.

The collision cener doesn't send the reports to the insurance agency until the person who got bumped files a claim. At that point, insurance companies need a plice report which is what you got from the collision center. Just because an accident is reported, doesn't mean that insurance goes up (this is waht the OPP officer had told us). IT's only when you claim against your insurance and depending on the amount, you can choose to settle it outside of your insurance.

To get money for your repairs, it depends on your policy and if the deductible is 500 and the repairs cost 400, i'd not use my insurance.

Good luck and sorry to hear that htis happened to ya...

-B

I am +ve about the front plate rule as we came from NS where it was not needed . Had to get it put in Ontario .... till the time it wasn't there (day / 2 ) put the number plate on the dash board per mechanic's suggestion .
