I would not dare carpool for trips across the border with strangers. You never know what you can land into. If you end up with a moron with 20 arrest warrants for different crimes, not only you will have a hard time explaining your situation to the CBP US, it can also jeopardize your entry to the US in future as well.
My advice: Rent a car!
