I am planning to come to Canada next month, I want to know which will be the best city to find a survival level job first ,( like $ 10 to $ 14 per hr) From my personal experience of living in Toronto for 4 months i found that in Canada it takes time to find a decent survival job, i don't know about current situation.

Please share your experience ,

Hey AV,

If you don't find decent survival job in toronto you will not find it anywhere else:down:
Can i ask you where did you live......Toronto or Mississuaga.According to my exp if you live near to downtown toronto you will definetly find a decent job i m pretty sure.....ppl(new arrivals) living in mississuaga become stagnant in their lives(i have seen couple of families)I do agree there are few (who have been in canada for 2 or 3 years) who have very good jobs but for new immigrants its better to live in Toronto....find a job near subway stn thats another mantra!

cheers
prince

Prince77

thats not true. your 'advice' may be unhelpful to someone who is looking for income to support themselves/their family.

AV:
You can find "survival" employment ANYWHERE IN CANADA. there is no magic place/formula to figure it all out in advance. People in small cities find survival work (which I assume means retail, labour, other sales, etc). Be flexible - this is one of the main rules in assimilating to a new country. Large cities = more jobs but also more competition.

Ensure your resume fits with what employers in the industry look for. In retail - many employers require applications filled out along with resumes and current LOCAL references, even if they are friends that can give character references.

edited to add: Look at other features of locations before deciding where to move to. Lifestyle/weather/geography/location of social support/etc.

I disagree morning rain with your statement. Prince 77 has made a very valid point. In fact, your advise may be very unhelpful to a person.
When you move to a smaller town, you will find that job oppertunities are very less and that the locals themselves are without a job. So it is very prudent to land in toronto, find a job and then may be if you get a job in a small town from Toronto , then move there.
I myself moved to a small town from Toronto and found that I canot even get a labour job here while Labour jobs abound in Toronto.

Nope. The smaller the town the harder it gets and less salary that you will get.
atleast in toronto, you have more food banks , more settlement agencies, move avenues to get cash jobs and the subsequent govt. benefits.

Hope this helps.
Please follow Prince 77 advise 9withour any prejudice to anyone)

Peace by TK

Really? this is my profession Tk. I deal with unemployed people on a regular basis. Toronto is not the only city in Canada. The perception on the west coast is that Ontario has been hit harder with layoffs than the rest of canada, however since there is a larger population and higher percentage of companies/business, that statistic may be skewed.

I dont know how you are conducting your job search - what industries are in that town etc. Unemployment exists in every city and people get jobs in every city. However you dont need to be in an area of 21 million people to have 'opportunities'.

To the OP:
As said, I fully agree with prince 77.
However, if you are really afraid of Toronto and the suburbs, you can try Saskatoon in vast potential for jobs. However, be aware of the low immigrant population, crime rate and the freezing cold.
Try to see how you can make use of the 7 years stay in Sask. and get $20,000 by the Sask. Govt..
When Oil prices go to above $100 a barrel, you can try Fort MacMurray in Alberta as well as Calgary and Edmonton. However, One MR. Rajan D who was there during boom times 9Calgary), has repeatedly told this forum that job availability (even survival) is not that easy. Mr rajan D is now in India.
You should really come to the GTA and try some unconventional methods of finding a job (like working on cash-taxi jobs and the like , getting max. govt. refunds, Using max. child benefits return from the govt., using food banks etc...). if you can give your line of work / education as well family status, I can advise you accordingly.

Hope this helps.

Peace by TK

I was in toronto for 4 months and i was workigng for a retail store for min wage , and i was looking for a full time job which i could not find, so i returned to india.

Disadvantage of living in a smaller town is it's extremely difficult to get a professional jobs as these jobs go to canadian born people.

I am considering toronto or vancouver
