Unless you are fluent in spoken and written French, concentrate your search in (1) Toronto/GTA (ON) (2) Cambridge/Kitchener/Waterloo/London (ON) and (3) Vancouver (BC).

Freezing or not depends on who you ask.
But Jan is not good because hiring slows down.
Starting from March hiring picks up, although who knows what will happen in 2009.

For a newcomer, with no driving ability and not having experienced the weather, there will be significant challenges.
March - April is a better time to start looking for jobs.
You may plan on arriving in Jan or Feb and take 2 months to settle down, get an apartment, etc. and then intensify your search starting March.

Hope you are aware that Canada is in recession. That means that jobs are harrd to come by, esp. during 2009 anytime.
Having said that , since you are in Software, there are more oppertunities in Software than for any other profession in Canada. Some software companies are looking to hire while others donot look to hire and hence without knowing your background skills, it is very hard to be specific.
Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, Halifax (one or 2 specific companies only) and Vancouver might probably be the best cities. Toronto comes at the very top.
Hiring may start only by Feb 2009. So it is better for you to send out your resumes after Jan 15th and then call the companies to follow up your resume by the 3rd. week of Jan.
Canada is a frozen land and no one bothers about the snow. You can take Bus /Subway (public transit) to attend interviews. Some interviews can happen in near by cities for which you can take bus to go there (only thing, you will spend a lot of time in travel). Once you get the job, you can buy a car.
Canada is a very safe city. As long as you are outside from 6 am to 10 pm and avoid down town areas in early mornings or late nights, you are almost 100% safe. We have a very efficient police service.
All the best and we welcome you to Canada

Peace by TK

Tamilkuravan,

You summed it up beautifully. Can you let us (people who would be coming soon) know what IT skills are there in demand, so that one can brush it up or gain the new skills, or develop the skills, getting certified etc. so they will have somewhat less trouble in finding the job.

I myself am not an IT person but have lot of contacts with IT people working in the GTA. I will have to tell you that almost all IT skills are welcomed by Canadian companies (once you have solid IT skills / experience, nice personality and good soft skills).
The following technologies are really hot in Canada
1. SAP / Oracle financials
2. Oracle (PL/SQL, D2K)
3. Dot-Net
4. Informatica (limited to a company in Waterloo, as far as I know)
5. Java

By the above, I donot mean to say that other technologies (in IT) are not employable in Canada, but that the above 4 (leaving Informatica) are really hot.
Hope other CD's can add more to it.

All the big organizations which have large Data Warehouses will require Informatica skills. There are quite a few in GTA

SQL Server skills too are in demand

I'd like to emphasize on what pratickm has mentioned - Starting from March hiring picks up, although who knows what will happen in 2009 - within the GTA I have seems organizations cutting down on IT budgets. A number of people who are from India on work permit have returned back in the past month. Something to keep in mind.
