Hello all Senior Desis,

We (me, my hubby and 2 sons, 7&5) are planning to land in end 2008 or beginning of 2009 , from India. This is our first international experience, so you can imagine our "butterflies in stomach" feeling.
It was by pure luck that I stumbled across Canadian Desi, which has by now given us a fairly good picture of what to expect, "black & white and even grey " situations regarding job markets. I appreciate all the Senior CDs who are doing a tremendous service by being guiding lights to people like us.

I am an HR Professional with about 10 years experience in training and core HR activities, while my hubby is an M Com, LLB and an MBA Finance , and his experience is mainly in running his family business (hotel industry). I have been researching CD site for anything regarding job opportunities in our fields. I see that most of you are from IT and Engineering background. I have not seen any posting regarding positions in Accounts or HR. So we are now a bit apprehensive,

Should we make this move or not??
Are there really oppertunities for people like us??
We are ready to take up any survival jobs, but as one respected Desi suggested in one of the posts, we have planned our strategy - We would utilise the first 2 months for job searching alone and if it doesn't work, think of survival jobs..

But , are there opportunities for people like us? We are planning to land in Toronto by the way, and plan to settle in Mississauga - We made all these decisions, based on our research we did with the help of CD. We had Vancouver in our first list, but then decided on Toronto eventually.

Please advise dear Seniors!!!

It will be a good move. Please go through this website. After you contact them and get some directions, you get back to us. So we also know what you got out of them.
You have to have a goal and an ambition. Then get it. With an MBA and LLB, I just don't know what to say...

Basically only if you join university here and get further upgrade to your Qualifications that you will be able to enter the mainstream job market.

Else you will have to do the rounds of Walmart , MLM etc.

Canada is meant for adventure seekers . Since you ve taken the initiative , you must come and you can only gain . Even if you decide to return after 3-4 years (which I m sure you won't) , at least you would have evolved by then .

One of you can do survival jobs initially to keep the expenses running - which is not difficult ... in the mean time the other one can seek a better job / upgrade him/herself per local requirements . This phase might last 1 year but beyond that the other partner who was doing odd jobs can take some time off and come back into the mainstream .......Take at least 1 - 1.5 months to select a job and do not be in a hurry though your expenses would press . Make Toronto the initial base and then lease an apartment where ever you get your first break . Good Luck !

As you can see from their initial posting, they have opened up a few of the offices to help new arrivals, PRIOR to their departure, from China, India and Philippines, and also at a few LOCAL locations within. Because they have found these locations where they can TAP for desirable people, who have been applying to Immigrate from there, are looking for HELP. Also their success rates in settling down in the new locations are astounding. They have adapted themselves into the New Multicultural Society very well.

The highly educated people, who would like to get started after landing, have found it an uphill task for themselves. To help in assisting them, to get a few good supplemental courses, the educational institutions have jumped into the foray. They are providing them with a little guidance in taking up the right courses and also internships for Doctors, that they are short of in this location, Canada. All of this is due to the fact that most of the fields in which the highly skilled people are trying to enter are very highly regulated. I will highlight them here.

The Regulating bodies are multifaceted. One one side they try and protect themselves professionally, by maintaining very high standards. The other side is that they want to protect their income source. The next one is they will not let themselves down. Each one protects the other. These are a few protectionist mentality that are embedded in them, that has kept a few immigrants chasing their dreams, even to this day. The cases that we hear are also provided on this web site. All of this exists here side by side and it is a part of Canada and we cannot take it away or close our eyes to it.

When the shortage got unbearable, in some professions, (As we say ' when the s**t hits the fan',) which is the case today, they had to over come this situations with work permits. Ah!, some one found a solution to this. There were people who jumped at this to take a shot at that position. This provided the Government to jump the OLD QUEUE System. That and a few other improvements led to this new immigration policy, or a change in it. Now with a bag of money at their disposal, that they now came into possession, they started this pilot program to try and sort out the mess we are into.

I kept pace with the first thousand or so. But the feed backs were none or only a few, and that too through their own web sites. Sounded like they were tooting their own horns. The effect of it will be felt but in small increments. All the same we want to see happy faces running down the streets. At least we see a few who seems to know where they are hurrying to. It is written all over their faces. It says, ' Yes,I got out of my old location.' (And into the New.)

Now the question is "Is this program only for people in India, China and the Philippines? I would like to say NO. It ought to be for everyone. So, keep them busy on the internet and throw your questions at them and see what kind of answers that you will get. They should be helpful to you regardless where you are situated. And the best part is.... You guessed it ... and we are not getting...... where as they all are. You are paying for it too, in some form or another. So, extract them to the last ounce of it or to the last penny.

Now the Employers will be jumping onto the Band Wagon. At which time you will feel more comfortable. With all of the education, guidance and help to settle down, if you don't find a GOOD employer to utilize your skills, we will be back to Square One. OR is it Two, which is... see them all move to the Good Old US of A.

Are we a part of them?! What are friends and good neighbors are there for. Help each other Of course!

Finance and Accounts job market is and will remain Hot here in Canada. To get into Finance /Accounting field here depend on your knowledge and work experiance. If You have worked on Good ERP e.g. SAP, Oracle etc.. and good knowledge of computers, there should not be any problem in getting into Finance/Accounting job.

For HR, One needs to upgrade here for sure either by doing Canada Payroll course or Diploma or MBA etc..
