I think I chose wrong words in my earlier reply. When you lose your job, you will not get any unemployment benefits, if you are on H1B or L1. Forget about unemployment benefits, you will fall out of legal visa status, unless you find some other job as soon as possible.
Your comparison is incorrect since you are comparing apples to oranges. This is because the rules in Canada for the work permit holders are the same - that you do not get EI benefits if you are a work permit holder and lose your job.
Also, what dimple says is right - that if you are cdn (or a cdn legal PR) and lose your job in the USA, you may be able to file the EI claim in Canada after returning to Canada. See this link:

Guys ,
An eye opening discussion . Thanks a lot for sharing this info . I have a few qs and would like to put them to the house for common benefit .
Can an EB1 / EB2 Visa be applied for as a Canadian PR ... or is it better to be applied for as a Canadian citizen . ?
Can EB2 and TN work simultaneously ?
Whats the most effective and practiced way to convert a TN to a GC and how much time does it take ?
Thanks .

in regards to your comparison of medical insurance.
Think about that you earning $100k / anum, in ON
Your average tax rate would be 28.04%
http://lsminsurance.ca/calculators/canada/income-tax
You rate is little over 8% where I live in States [there are some states where there is no income tax].
http://www.hrblock.com/taxes/tax_calculators/index.html#
so you paid $28000 to get your so called decent heath insurance?
that comes around $2300 / month
Now if you wanna compare apple to apple then pay $2300 / month to your medical insurance company in USA and I can bet that any insurance company will accept any kind of pre-existing condition, even cancer as well.
And don't forget on the top of this you will also get the treatment like a prince of some country.
The $2300/month plan rocks !!!.
