Now and then during the terrible winters I think its time to move to the states.

I have 2 questions:

1) Has anyone immigrated to the states from Canada and how difficult or easy a process that is? My wife is still on PR. I am a canadian citizen.

2) For people who have not immigrated (i.e. not got a green card) but just working in the USA on a visa (being a Canadian citizen and using Nafta), what is your experience like?

I too am very much interested in this. Not because of the winters, which infact I like but because of the endless professional opportunities available there.

I haven't immigrated, but I know a lot of people who have the process going on. The process is more complicated than the Canadian Immigration process and unlike the Canadian one, you will need a company to sponsor you (atleast for the employment based category). Time taken would depend on your educational qualifications and the country you were born in (not the citizenship you hold right now). There are three main categories, EB1 (For Phds), EB2 (For a master's degree holder) and EB3 (For a bachelor's degree holder). The priority dates (Applications received on or before this date are being processed now) differ for all three categories.

Just to give you an overview, the priority date of a person born in India with a Masters Degree (EB2) is June 2001 right now.

EB1 is current (which means they will start processing the application as soon they receive it) .

EB3 is..... God only knows.

TN is not for everyone. They have a set of occupations defined under NAFTA and people falling under those categories (either by education or work experience) are the only ones who are eligible for a TN.

It is rather a simple process and you get it an the border. With recent changes, you can actually get it for three years as compared to one year previously. All you need is a letter from your employer (in a set format, they are very strict about this) and your degrees (evaluated, if they are not from NA).

Hope this help!

No... June 2001... :). Which means they are now processing the applications received in June 2001, under EB2 category.

Nope, the other poster meant 2001. That means, they are processing applications filed June 2001. For someone filing today, it may take another 6 to 10 years before immigrant visas become available (assuming current scenario, which may change for better or worse).

For COB India EB3 is unavailable and EB2 has retrogressed to jan 2000.

"IKnowNothing" seems to know a lot! :-) Very nice summary!

The process is long, but it is worth waiting since there are many opportunities in the US. My experience of moving to the US was wonderful!
