Me n my wife landed before 2 months...
l ve been to CIC website to check the govt benefits we can get..but cant find much...
Wud appreciate if anyone can help me ...
l m currently workin... my wife is not workin...
also wud like to know abt child benefit...if we plan to have a kid...?
and we tried to apply for OSAP for my wife to study ..but they denied it sayin we need to be present in this country for atleast 6 months to be eligible to get osAP ?
ls there any other financial help or scholarships we can get from govt...
any other useful info anyone can provide which we need to know...
kindly appreciate yur feedbacks...

To be honest... l dont even know wat kinda benefits are govt providing for PR..
l know abt health card (OHIP i guess) and OSAP...
l dont knw abt child benefits... l ve heard abt EI but i guess i m workin rite now and its been a month only...so i wont be entitled to it unless i get laid off after 6 months..
Rest l dont ve any idea abt any kind of benefits to which i may be entitled to....

You don't have to get discouraged, because you did not qualify for the grants this time. You can get the required books and worksheets through the school systems and work on them from home. Next semister you will be eligible to apply and succeed with it. So, prepare yourself for it and when you do get entry into the course, 'ACE' it an move on with good credits.
Here is a link to the website that will give you a lot of information. Go through each of the high lights. Jot down all of the details and the phone numbers etc., and then use it well.

Good Question.
A lot of time, new immigrants forget what you are entitled to when you immigrate to a country like Canada which relies on your taxes and your skills to fund local born people.
It took me about 7 years to collect all this info. but there can be more.
The list is as follows :
1. Health care is partially free. There is no fee for flu shots, consultations with doctors or anything while hospitalised. You need to pay for car parking in hospitals / clinics, medicines (unless you have a extended health plan) and dental work. This is just the essense.
2. Once a child is born, $ 100 a month (known as universal amount) till the child reaches the age of 6 (irrespective of income).
3. If you annual income is less than $ 21,500 (after all deductions) and you have one child (below age 18) you get
a) $167 a month from the govt.
b) Another $159 a month from the Govt.
c) $500 per year for the child
d) Some money ranging between $75-$150 a month from the Ontario govt.
All this will get slightly reduced up to family income of $33,000 and then above that drastically reduced or refused.
4. RESP contribution of 20% of your contribution subject to a max of $400 a month
5. Local food banks give you free food (groceries / tinned cans only) if you are in low income.
6. GST/PST credits once in 3 months (Generally when your family income is $ 60 K or less )
7. If you are unable to pay rent or electricity, then there is some provision for the govt. to pay it (Subject to eligibility).
8. When you are planning for a child , Please register with a famous Gync. as they typically have one year waiting list. Same way also register for the subsidised daycare as they may have 1-2 year waiting list in the GTA.
9. Subsidised daycare (depending on your income). See the local social welfare centres.
10. Free bus passes if you register in ESL classes (daycare also provided Free)
11. Many festivals (such as Carribana, gay Parade/Pride/ Blues concert) are free.
12. If you ever get get admission in a public college, there is a $150 FREE handout from the govt. of ontario for books. No recepits necessary.
13. If you work 910 hours in payroll and you are laid off , then you are eligible of EI which is 45-50 weeks on 55 % of your last drawn salary (max of $437 a week) till you find another job. If you donot like to go on a job, then you can do a course which runs max. of 2 years and the govt. will spend a max. of $28,000 on the course / living allowance / gas allowance / parking allowance / book allowance. You can continue to get weekly EI money while you are studying. But please donot tell anyone this , b'cos if everyone knows this and avail these benefits, there is a possibility that the govt. may restrict the program or make it very hard for immigrants (recent) ones to get it.
