Hi
Is it advisable to give out DL number to auto insurance brokers?
I am shopping around for the best rate, but most of the auto ins brokers (especially Desis) refused to give me a quote unless I give them my DL number.
What are the things that I should be careful of, while dealing with auto ins brokers?
Do I need to verify the companies they are offering, before I part with my bank acc info for pre-auth withdrawls?

Usually the auto insurance people ask for DL# to know your past history of driving. If you are a driver with good record you get good rate. If you are novice or have a bad record then your insurance will be a little more to quote.

To my surprise, I also kind of found insurance people calculate the quote based on the distance you drive (home to work/pleasure trips).
CDs correct me on this.

Insurance is for risk. And obviously, more the distance you drive, more the risk - that's the basic assumption. Hence the included factor.

Yes you are right. Don't give the DL number to anyone. Not even to the cop who pulls you over for speeding. Tell him you suspect he might just steal your identity. You never know, he might give up the uniform and start living as Mr Duke76... :)

ID theft can happen in many ways beyond your DL. What happens if your employer gives away the SIN, birth date, address, full name, etc? What happens if your bank does the same?

You have already given away lots of your private info to many institutions and you'll just have to trust things would be safe :(

You can get ballpark estimates/quotes online or on the phone for which you don't need to enter any personal info...right? I have done so with many insurance companies.

If you need more accurate quote, you need to divulge more info...that's a fair deal I think.
