Thanks Maharaj.
I am leaning towards that too.

Your second partition is to rebuilt your laptop with factory default OS n Softwares (which is Vista). This partition is not to be touched.

When installing fresh, wont this be deleted? BTW, my system is Desktop, not laptop - not that it matters.

As it is new machine - I believe it has atleast 300GB Hard Disk. Assuming same, when you install Win7 - Create new partition of 100GB as your C:\\ rather than installing it on existing single partition. Create second partition with rest of 200GB. You can use this Secondary Partition \"D:\\\" Drive to store your data - which would be easier for you to maintain, backup n rebuilt. Incase of problem, you basically can rebuilt machine with Win7 without worrying of backing up data as it is in D:\\.

Thats always my plan. Just wanted to confirm if we are offered this partition option while performing fresh install or should I make the partitions before starting installation?

I must also warn you that if you decide to rebuilt to factory-default from that partition - don't do it without backing up your data. As this process basically repartitions (erasing) everything.

One last, Microsoft has Free Security Pack, including Anti Virus that you can use. I am using it even though I have McAfee. As long as possible - I avoid third party.

OK..will try that as well. Heard decent reviews about it so far.

Thanks again. Keep the comments coming whenever you find something new to add.

Cheers.

One of my buddy at work & I got these laptops on same day & he chose to do fresh install & i did the upgrade . I haven't noticed any difference with regards to performace at all. The laptops are less than a month old & we hardly used it. I am not sure if this your new laptop or old laptop. Anything old or heavily used laptop i would go with fresh install. As other have suggested & i do concur that fresh install is always best option, more like repainting than the touchup's. Either ways i didnt care much as i use my mac as my primary at home.

Please clarify- if you/your friend did the fresh install from the upgrade DVDs?

Thanks for your comments.

The upgrade DVD's we got was Windows 7 home premium & yes it does have an option of doing fresh install however you have to select "custom" Advanced option rather than "upgrade " option during installation process. My buddy however did not use the disks provided to him by HP as he went with much more higher version "Windows 7 ultimate"a copy of which was already available at our workplace & he did that way before he got the upgrade dvd's.
