Since my Vista laptop passed away, I decided to fire up an old XP desktop. I installed 2 x 1 GB DDR2 RAM in memory slots. I use an ECS motherboard

However, WinXP shows only around 900 MB RAM, Linux does the same. However, the memory shown under both OS is different. My BIOS setup program does not give any information about memory, and I do not get a boot-up screen counting memory or showing hard drives. I use 32 bit Windows XP Basic OS.
A cursory google search informed me that people have faced similar issue, but with 4 GB showing 2 GB RAM.
I tried using 1 slot at at a time and 1 memory chip at a time to ensure everything was working OK. I am using DVI port on motherborad to connect my monitor (no separate videocard). The maximum memory that mother board can accommodate is either 2 GB DDR or 2 GB DDR2
Can anybody help troubleshoot this issue? Is my computer using 2 GB RAM but showing 1 GB, or is it just using 1 GB RAM?
How much RAM does it show when using a single 1GB RAM? Are both RAM of same type and speed (533 or 400) as listed in the specification in your link above?

It should not be that the computer is showing lesser RAM . The RAM s might be incompatible and though you may have inserted new RAM but it may not be used due to incompatibility .
Is it possible that one of the slots may be faulty ..Do this ... take out one RAM , check the display .... Then take out the other one and insert in the first one & check the display ...If either of the slots OR RAM s are faulty or incompatible , it should show up ..

The problem is that neither my startup screen nor BIOS shows how much RAM is available.
You can check your RAM by Going to RUN command and Type dxdiag,it will shows all the features.
