Thank you. Will keep in mind.

Processor: Core i3 is recommended for simple use
Core i7 if you are looking to do video editing etc.

RAM: DDR3 is now standard with Cor i series laptops. 4 GB is sufficient in most situations. You can go with 6/8 GB because RAM is cheap now.

Hard Drive: 7200 RPM is minm if you really want to see a performance gain. SSD would be ideal if you can spend the extra $200.

DVD Drive: DVD burners are standard now with almost all laptops. You can get a combo drive with Blu Ray Read and DVD RW if you intend to watch Blu Ray Movies

Screen: Most people overlook it but i think going with a high resolution screen is worth it. But you need to look into higher end models 1440*900 screen on 14" laptop is what i find ideal for doing work on MS Office and browsing web.

Battery: 6 Cell minimum. Can go with 8 cell if you don't carry it around too much. Look for 4-6 hours battery life to truly enjoy laptop computing.

Keyboard: Look for backlit ones(again you might need to go to Higher end model)

HDMI port is also something that comes almost standard now but good to make sure you choose one which has HDMI.

USB 3.0: Some laptops now come with the USB 3.0 port which would be a good investment.

Trackpad: Look for multi touch trackpads which allow you to zoom in zoom out etc with finger gestures (almost all are coming with it now)

Touch Screen: If you like touch screen you can now get it on many laptop models.

WebCam: Good to have a webcam (2.0 MP atleast)

Video Card: Look for Switchable graphics from nVidia if you like to play occasional games on your laptop.

OS: I guess Windows 7 64 bit is good. You can get Win 7 Pro if you need to use Windows XP mode. From retailers its $60 extra usually to upgrade to Pro

Speakers: If you like to listen to music without headphones look for decent inbuilt speakers.

Networking: Should have Wireless N (almost all do) and Gigabit ethernet. Bluetooth if you like.

Card Slot: SD card slot etc.

Look for Apple if you have the extra cash and want something different. You will get almost the best spec but it is a little pricey.

Thanks dfwrp. Not sure if I really need a higher end model, but I'll check out the quote and see where I stand before deciding.

Two questions:

1. Will office 2007 run with Windows 7 OS or do I need to buy Office 2010?
2. If I get a Blu Ray drive, will my "low-life" DVDs run? :)

Thanks.

Yes office 2007 is compatible with Windows 7. Yes your low life dvds will still run.
