Dear CD's,
I will be moving to Toronto in March 2010.
1) Can anybody advise where should I stay considering the jobs market as I am accountant by profession. My wife she has experience in logistics?
2) I also would like to know if there are Marathi families in Toronto? and in which area?
3) I have got transfer credit for 11 papers out of 21 papers in CGA. I would like to know can I ask for further credits and if yes then am I suppose to give any entrance exams for exemption in advance level 4?
4) What salary should I expected initially?
5) What will be the cost of living for me, my wife and my 2 yrs old son?
Thanking you in advance. Please advise?
Regards

I am not an accountant, but just trying you to provide some information based on experience
- Keep minimal expectations. Do not expect that your experience in Baharin will help you land an accountant's job in Canada. Although I believe that accounting is a job that will always be in demand, I also believe that supply outweighs demand.
- Canada is recovering from recession and people with previous Canadian experience may stand a better chance of reentering the workforce compared to a new immigrant. Again, it depends whether you have something exceptional to offer (technical hard skill) which a local candidate lacks.
- Expect to do a labour or an entry level job and get expected to be paid $10-12 per hour. It might help if you have excellent Excel/Access/Data Entry skills. That is how I survived my initial struggle.
- Cost of living - Per month - Maybe $800 for a basement apartment rental, $200-$250 for food. $100 - TV/Internet/Phone (You can use free internet in public libraries, but there will be a long lineup), $100-150 - Transportation assuming all of you use public transit. $100 - incidental/emergency. No idea about kids expense.
There are lots of threads with information you have asked for. Search/browse CD for all those threads.
There are lots of members who have immigrated recently and have a better idea about the information you have asked for. But to summarise, keep your expectations to minimal and get ready to struggle for initial 3-4 years of your stay in Canada.

Aditya,
To be very honest with you, your experience & qualification in Baharin will not matter much in Canadian market. You can apply for in various websites but it is highly unlikely that you will get good response.Best Course of Action will be do go for Canadian Certifications & go for any survival Jobs. There is too much competition here for few jobs. Be prepared for long struggle ahead.

...............
driller has mentioned explicitly what I was trying to imply. While I agree that getting a job, ideally in their own field is the main worry for immigrant, the focus should be also on settling down in the new country and getting acquainted/adjusted to new environment.
Moving from Baharin to TO will be totally new experience, and it will be a while to get used to Canadian lifestyle/weather/people. Give yourself at least a year to cope up with the culture shock. Concentrate on getting settled down mentally here while continuing your job search.

Hi Aditya,
There are places called "Skill for Change" in Toronto and Dufferin Peel Board of Education in Mississauga, etc. There are many others ..these are just 2 of them i know of. Please google them and contact them and go there in person. They give few months work-placements opportunity exactly in your field for Foreign Trained Accountants or any foreign Trained professional. They help with your resume, job search and there are people called Job developers who even talk to the employer behalf of you. They make you target specifically in your accounting field and work with you.
At the same time you register in CGA, CMA or CA institutes and take courses while doing this.
Accountemps is really good Employement Agency to apply for accounting job. There is one in Mississauga in RobertSpeck Parkway and Hurontario close to the CIBC bank building. You go there in person and drop of your resume or fax or email it to them. They will test you on office skills (Excel, word, powerpoint) and accounting.
