Hi,
I am currently in a predicament. Hope, I'll find some expert advise on some of my relocation questions.
I am currently working in BC. My company is closing their business here, and gave me an option to relocate to Toronto and keep the same job or they will lay me off by the end of March, 2012. I still have 4 months before they I initiate the move. I have my own house here, married, but no kids. If I move, company will pay the moving expenses (min. $5000).
Pro's of relocation:
1. Company will pay moving expenses
2. I'll be able to keep the same job with the current benefits and salary
3. Access to the broad IT market, thus more opportunities.
4. Affordable housing market in GTA.
5. Have few friends and families.
6. Might not able to find job locally in Vancouver for the same skillset.
7. Will retain my seniority, thus more opportunities within the same company. Have to start afresh if I join any other company here in BC locally and will have to compete with already established employees.
8. Lived in GTA for a brief period of time so not completely new.
9. Still have job in my hand.
Con's:
1. Have to sell my house here in BC, to which we are emotionally attached to.
2. Quality of life, lack of natural beauty as compared to BC. Thus, less leisure places in Toronto in contrast.
3. Access to the cross-border shopping - 30 minutes from Vancouver. Not a case in Toronto.
3. Have to leave old friends.
4. Pain of moving.
I am stressed and hence, would appreciate expert advise on this.
Thanks in advance.
I can say something about cons.
1. You do not need to sell the house. You can rent it for now. If you like in toronto then sell it otherwise you will have option to go back
2. I do not think there will be difference in quality of life except it will be more colder
3. Buffalo is only 1 hour away. 1/2 hour does not make difference
4. can't comment as it more personal choice
5. one time pain could be all time gain.
Understandably a stressful time for you !
How much time do you have to give reply to your company? in that time look for another Job in BC.
If that is not materialising,
Since you are in IT , I would say take this as a positive push to shift your base to Toronto which is broader mkt.
I heard homes are more expensive in vanc. than Toronto. Who knows you may gain some equity over there :-). just trying to see the positives.
Btw you listed more positives than negatives , I think you are shifting !! welcome.
Hi San-Hugo,
You're right. I listed more positives than negatives as I believe the scariness/nervousness of selling the house and leaving everything that I built from scratch is one aspect that supersedes more number of positives. Other than that, I am ok with the move due to the IT opportunities in Toronto. I don't know whether I would be able to find an equally good opportunity here in Vancouver in a given timeframe. I have another week to let them know my intent to move, then I think it's gonna be the January or mid-February when I'll move eventually. So, in a nutshell I have only until Dec. to either find a job locally or list my house.
I hardly have a choice other than shifting. I am also not sure if $5000 moving expenses suffice. Have to research more into it.
Hi Desi # 1,
Thanks, but I will probably be selling the house. Don't want to commute between Toronto-Vancouver on an ongoing basis. It will just induce my stress further.
Thanks for your input.

Hi,
I have finally decided to move to Toronto (very tough decision <a big sigh...). I will be working off the Dixie Road, Brampton. Could someone please advise me of a decent neighborhood with good Schools, transit, and Public amenities that are easily accessible to this location as well as other commercial centres? I am looking for Milton as I have heard it's a newer subdivision with relatively affordable real estate. However, I am little skeptical of the daily commute. How's the Derry Road commute from Milton to Bramton in terms of the traffic, or if in case I opt for the public transit? I don't want to take 401 route as I heard it is notorious for traffic gridlocks. Just to clarify, I will be renting for a very short period initially, as I need to port my mortgage within the first 2 months of selling my house here.
All suggestions are welcomed? Thank you.
buy house up north in brampton anywhere between tobram to dixie above sandlewood.
Also can also buy in castlemore area.( airport-gore)
Within brampton public transport is well connected.
Kids school are all okay. Just make sure u put your kids in high school in private.
You will miss weather of vancouver.
But which IT company is coming over to brampton?. The area is very close to international airport . Most IT companies are either in markham, downtown toronto or square one missigasua
