Collection of 'filth' upsets mother
Child predator to be sentenced next month.
The mother of a girl victimized by former Newmarket caterer Shawn Ahluwalia wept as descriptions of his child pornography collection were presented during a hearing Friday.
The woman, who cannot be identified, clutched a tissue and later left the courtroom in tears.
Newmarket Crown attorney Michelle Rumble described some of the thousands of child pornography images Mr. Ahluwalia had in his collection when he was arrested by York police in 2008.
Mr. Ahluwalia, 33, a former school teacher, pleaded guilty to manufacturing and possessing child pornography, two counts of sexual interference and breaching a communication order last month. York police accused him of inappropriate sexual activity with two 10-year-old girls.
Mr. Ahluwalia, clad in a red sweater, black pants and shackles, sat stoic in the prisoner’s dock while details of his pornography collection was revealed.
“He has an appetite for material that violates, terrorizes, hurts and really dehumanizes children,” Ms Rumble told Justice Edwin Minden after asking that Mr. Ahluwalia be sentenced to 7-1/2 years in prison, not including the time he has served in pre-sentence custody.
“Without people like Mr. Ahluwalia collecting this filth, maybe there would not be all these monsters making it,” Ms Rumble told the court.
Investigators raided Mr. Ahluwalia’s Newmarket home and Just For You Catering, formerly on Eagle Street, east of Yonge Street, in 2008 and seized several computers, a camera and photographs, York police said.
Mr. Ahluwalia owned the business.
He had no previous criminal record, Ms Rumble told the court.
Certified to teach in 2000, Mr. Ahluwalia worked for a Kingston school board until he was accused of sexually assaulting a young girl, Ms Rumble told the court.
During an Ontario College of Teachers disciplinary committee hearing in 2003, the panel was shown a video of an interview by Kingston police of an eight-year-old girl, accusing Mr. Ahluwalia of sexually touching her on several occasions when he tutored or babysat her, a summary of the hearing states.
The college found him guilty of professional misconduct and ordered his teaching certificate revoked.
Another woman, whose daughter knew Mr. Ahluwalia and was watching the court proceedings, said she believes children have more access to information about how to be Internet safe.
“I think there needs to be more education, especially in the education system,” she said outside the courtroom. “We’re going more and more computerized in our school systems and these guys know how to get in there.”
She called Mr. Ahluwalia’s case “horrific”.
“It’s shocking to hear all that stuff ... that somebody in our community could be doing those sick things,” she said. “I’m still in shock.”
She believes Mr. Ahluwalia is a danger to the public.
“I believe there are a whole lot more out there like him, but just haven’t been caught.”
Sentencing is expected next month.
